Northwest native Jenny Anne Mannan began her musical education at a tender age, touring with her family’s bluegrass band, The Bullas, and garnering awards at fiddle contests along the way. In 1998 she moved to Nashville with her brother Luke Bulla, where the pair co-founded a band and became fixtures in the Nashville bluegrass scene. Jenny Anne toured with country songwriter Paul Overstreet, and was often a guest of artists such as Ricky Skaggs, Chris Jones, and Jim Lauderdale. Since her return to Spokane, WA, where she currently lives with her husband, author Caleb Mannan and their 4 children, she has released Saints and Sinners, in addition to lending fiddle and vocals to Irish band An Dochas. Her newest release, Carnies & Cowboys, will be available soon.

No one can accuse violinist and composer Jenny Scheinman of promulgating any kind of jazz cliché, or even of fitting in especially well with the rest of the Cryptogramophone label's crew of off-kilter jazz experimentalists. Her obsession is with songs and with lyrics – neither of which appear on this paradoxically titled album. The 12 compositions here aren't actually songs, but are meant to feel like songs, by which Scheinman means that they're intended to be clear, straightforward, singable, and emotionally direct.

Ondine is proud to release these world premiere recordings of two new Zemlinsky arrangements by Richard Dünser (b. 1959) with Lapland Chamber Orchestra conducted by John Storgårds. The works of Austrian composer Alexander Zemlinsky (1871-1942) - much admired by composers such as Mahler, Schoenberg and Berg - have gained more attention during the last decades. He wrote only 27 works with an opus number, but several of them can be considered among 20th century masterpieces. In 2013 composer Richard Dünser (b. 1959), pupil of Francis Burt and Hans Werner Henze, made two new rich arrangements of works by Zemlinsky. Seven Songs of Night and Dream (Sieben Lieder von Nacht und Traum) is an orchestration of songs from opp. 2, 5, 6, 8 and 10 based on the themes of night and dream. In this recording the songs are sung by mezzo-soprano Jenny Carlstedt. Chamber Symphony is a 40-minute orchestration of Zemlinsky's String Quartet No. 2. In this orchestration the limitations of a string quartet is set free by using a larger ensemble. Zemlinsky's String Quartet contains references to the works of his most famous pupil, Arnold Schoenberg.

A must for fans of german pianist Joachim Kuhn and the fantastic acoustic bassist J.F. Jenny Clark. Recorded in '87 in Germany with fantastic sound quality and musicianship. Very improvisational and highly energetic yet lyrical. A little known gem - at least on this side of the pond.

Violinist Jenny Scheinman's instrumental companion recording to her eponymously titled vocal-emphasized effort of the same time period in 2008 is both an opposite reaction to pop styles and an extension of orchestral music with modern-day twists and turns. It reflects her time working with electric guitarist Bill Frisell, who appears on this date, and also gives a bigger picture of her classical influences via a huge string ensemble, while hinting at the modern creative jazz where her violin voicings take a firmer grip at the core.
