Cold Steel The Warrior's Edge

A 4000-year-old body is found preserved in an Irish peat bog, in Cashel, in Ireland's midlands. To scientists and historians, it could offer brand new clues to solve an ancient mystery: the hundreds of bodies found mummified in the boglands of Northern Europe. An international team of experts assemble to investigate this new find, led by Ned Kelly of the National Museum of Ireland. Ned is a veteran archaeologist, and has previously investigated some of Ireland's most famous bog bodies. Now, will "Cashel Man" help prove his theory these Irish victims were ancient kings?

Cyrus, the leader of the most powerful gang in New York City, the Gramercy Riffs, calls a midnight summit for all the area gangs, with all asked to send nine unarmed representatives for the conclave. A gang called The Warriors are blamed for killing Cyrus as he gives his speech. They now have to cross the territory of rivals in order to get to their own 'hood. The Warriors slowly cross the dangerous Bronx and Manhattan territories, narrowly escaping police and other gangs every step of the way.

The original A&M album presentation has been remastered, with songs from Joe Walsh, Arnold McCuller, Desmond Child and others sounding better than ever. But to top even that, Barry DeVorzon's influential original film score finally makes its world premiere, nearly 35 years since the film's release (the two score tracks on the original '79 album were uniquely mixed for that release).

Aside from an almost-ran in "You Got Me Hummin'," Cold Blood never really had any hits to speak of, so assembling a best-of is less a matter of picking hit singles than of individual taste. As such, this is a decent compilation of this San Francisco workhorse. It's also the only release readily available on CD, probably because it's all most listeners will need. It includes all of their debut album, as well as some of their better later tracks like "Lo and Behold." Cold Blood stayed true to its female-belter and brass-band blues formula throughout its career, with the result that this retrospective coheres as an album in its own right.

Call Joe Simon the reluctant soul star. Despite his countless hits in the 1960s and '70s, his heart just wasn't in it, though the sound proved otherwise. Thankfully, that's not a bit apparent on this collection, which consists of his fabulous, hit-laden discography from 1966-1970 with producer Richbourg at the helm for Sound Stage 7 Records.
