Three CD set. Following 2021's Musik Music Musique 2. 0 set, the third volume in the series looks at the electronic pop scene as it came to dominate the airwaves. A period which saw the 1980's credible musical landscape evolve from gritty post-punk to shamelessly aspirational polished pop. Featuring countless artists who would become household names (many of which remain active today) alongside lesser-known scene mainstays, independent innovators and novelty opportunists, Musik Music Musique 3. 0 explores the evolution of synth pop from anything resembling a 'scene' into the standard musical form of the day, soon to be embraced by everybody from power balladeers to quasi-rock stadium acts. From chart staples and nightclub anthems to rarities, curios and collectables, this set gives equal airtime to all, basking in the breadth of ideas and innovation being explored as the musical world moved towards the mid-80s.

You might not watch Alfonso Cuarón's deeply personal story inspired by his family's housekeeper in 1970s Mexico City and think of El-P or Billie Eilish. But this genre-hopping compilation is meant to invoke the spirit, if not the letter, of the largely scoreless Oscar-nominated film. Only a handful of the songs are in Spanish or feel like they could have come from the era itself—Jessie Reyez's ballad “Con el Viento” among them—while Ibeyi's “Cleo Who Takes Care of You” is the exception that overtly references the plot. What binds the songs together, even from seemingly incongruent artists, is a hazy, dreamlike tension—from Beck's majestic cover of the 1982 Colourbox song “Tarantula” to Patti Smith's reprise of her own “Wing” from 1996. But the biggest revelation may be Cuarón's teenage daughter Bu, whose “PSYCHO” is pure contemporary pop, positioned perfectly alongside Billie Eilish's skittish “When I Was Older.”

The biggest single in M|A|R|R|S' career was the only single in their career, the highly influential "Pump Up The Volume". People had never quite heard of a song full of samples from other songs, even though the collage-style of production was something made famous by Double Dee & Steinski and other DJ's and producers. This disc is the U.S. version on 4th & B'Way/Island with mixes that may be different from the UK disc.

Modern English - Take Me To The Trees
Post-Punk, New Wave | MP3 CBR 320 kbps | 39:41 min | 93.2 MB
Label: InKind Music | Tracks: 10 | Rls.date: 2017

2017 release, the first album in 30 years from the original line-up of the post-punk legends. Bands are like families, bound by something deeper than friendship - and liable to implode just as irrevocably. Yet that familial bond can equally draw you back, and so it is that four-fifths of the original Modern English have recorded their first album together in 30 years. Take Me To The Trees not only reconnects the band to their roots, in the fervent and fecund world of late 1970s/ early 1980s post-punk Britain, but they have co-produced it with Martyn Young of Colourbox and M/A/R/R/S fame, whose last production job was 1986. Moreover, the album's beautiful cover is by venerated art director Vaughan Oliver, whose very first sleeve design was Modern English's 'Gathering Dust' single in 1980.
