Jazz / Neo Bop / Trumpet

Baikida Carroll has long been one of the top trumpeters in freer forms of jazz, but he has rarely had opportunities to lead his own record date. This 1994 CD is a happy exception, and it features Carroll playing free bop and atmospheric ballads in a quintet with tenor saxophonist Erica Lindsay, pianist Steve Colson, bassist Santi Debriano, and drummer Pheeroan akLaff. The ten compositions are all Carroll's, and they cover a variety of moods and grooves. The music overall is more accessible than one would expect, making this an excellent introduction to Baikida Carroll's music.

Live In San Diego ’74 is an unreleased live radio concert recovered from the depths of the Rory Gallagher archives. This recording features Rory and his band playing a 7 song set at the San Diego Sports Arena on February 8, 1974. This period is regarded as one of his peak live eras, most notably on his album Irish Tour ’74, which is his biggest-selling record.

Jean Maillard's life is shrouded in mystery, and his music is rarely heard today. Yet in his own time his works were both influential and widely known: indeed, the musicologist François Lesure held him to be one of the most important French composers of his era. Who better, then, than Rory McCleery's Marian Consort to give this composer's rich and varied output its first dedicated recording? Their characteristically precise and yet impassioned performances bring out both the network of influence in which Maillard's music participated its Josquin-esque pedigree, and influence on successors including Lassus and Palestrina and its striking, individual beauty.
