Combinatorial (or discrete) optimization is one of the most active fields in the interface of operations research, computer science, and applied math­ ematics. Combinatorial optimization problems arise in various applications, including communications network design, VLSI design, machine vision, air­ line crew scheduling, corporate planning, computer-aided design and man­ ufacturing, database query design, cellular telephone frequency assignment, constraint directed reasoning, and computational biology. Furthermore, combinatorial optimization problems occur in many diverse areas such as linear and integer programming, graph theory, artificial intelligence, and number theory.

The layout of integrated circuits on chips and boards is a complex task. A major portion of the research in the area of design automation has been devoted to the development of efficient and easy-to-use systems that support circuit layout. There are two aspects of building a layout system that are difficult. One is the combinatorial aspect and the other is the systems aspect. The combinatorial aspect is that most of the optimization problems that have to be solved during integrated-circuit layout are intractable.

This book provides a literature review of techniques used to pass from continuous to combinatorial space, before discussing a detailed example with individual steps of how cuckoo search (CS) can be adapted to solve combinatorial optimization problems. It demonstrates the application of CS to three different problems and describes their source code. The content is divided into five chapters, the first of which provides a technical description, together with examples of combinatorial search spaces.
