On his fourth recording for harmonia mundi, GRAMMY-nominated conductor Miguel Harth-Bedoya leads the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra in an all-orchestral program featuring Witold Lutoslawski's Concerto for Orchestra and Arnold Schoenberg's orchestration of Brahms's Piano Quartet No.1. With its use of folk melodies to generate tremendous momentum and dramatic impact, the Concerto for Orchestra established Lutoslawski as Poland's leading contemporary composer. Harth-Bedoya couples this powerful and complex score with Schoenberg's rich and colorful arrangement of one of Brahms's most popular chamber works.

Joseph Haydn claimed to have discovered the string quartet form by accident. His Op. 1, No. 1 has the cheerful five-movement form of a Divertimento, while the glorious and harmonically daring Op. 77, No. 1 was among the last he completed in the genre. Falling between the two, Op. 33, No. 5 is full of rhythmic surprises and a theme that gives it the nickname ‘How do you do?’ The award-winning Goldmund Quartet is considered one of today’s most exciting young European string quartets.

Because Daniel Barenboim is so closely associated with the German orchestral repertoire, conducting the music of English composer Edward Elgar may seem a bit of a byway, though his explorations in previous Decca recordings of the Cello Concerto in E minor with Alisa Weilerstein, and the Symphony No. 2 in E flat major with the Staatskapelle Berlin, have yielded exceptional results. This performance of the Symphony No. 1 in A flat major (1908), again with the Staatskapelle Berlin, is a powerful meditation on the human drama, and while it lacks a specific program, the music evokes a mixture of bittersweet nostalgia and darker forebodings.

Six Italians and one Frenchman: a consummate realisation of Saint-Saëns multifaceted musical idiom These two chamber works represent Camille Saint-Saëns early perfection and his expressive classical mature style. Brilliance and an unerring sense of form; calm, melancholy resting and energetic gestures; romantic vocal qualities and exquisite compositional art the contrasts characterising Saint-Saëns musical idiom are perfectly realised by the Quartetto di Cremona.

Harri Ahmas is a bassoon (Fagott) player in the Lahti SO, and, as such, he has participated in countless recordings for us. He has also aranged a lot of music included in that orchestra's records of Finnish Psalms without singing - an as surprising as overwhelming sales success story). Not content with that, he is also a composer in his own right, and we are proud to be able to present to you his First Symphony, lovingly played by his orchestra under no less than Okko Kamu. This is, for the time being, a digital-only release, so this is the only chance you have to buy it until further notice.

The music of Gustav Mahler, the Late Romantic composer on the threshold of modernity, has been a firm part of the repertoire of the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks ever since the early 1960s, when the orchestra's Mahler tradition was established by its former chief conductor Rafael Kubelik. BR-KLASSIK has already released Mahler's First (as part of an audiobook CD) and Seventh Symphonies with Mariss Jansons, as well as the Ninth with Bernard Haitink. The young Canadian conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin is making his debut here on the BR-KLASSIK label with Mahler's First Symphony.
