Johannes Brahms’ four symphonies were greeted by his contemporaries as the most promising answer to Beethoven’s legendary legacy, and they have remained at the core of the symphonic repertoire ever since. Steering clear of poetic titles and adhering to traditional forms, they are nonetheless full of drama and musical innovation. This digital boxset presents the symphonies in chronological order, performed by the Pittsburgh Symphony under the baton of Marek Janowski, one of the greatest interpreters of German Romantic repertoire.

Maestro Marek Janowski and the WDR Symphony Orchestra present a new recording of Beethovens complete symphonies, the ultimate symphonic oeuvre in all thinkable respects. Bold as they still sound to modern ears, one easily imagines how Beethovens contemporaries were completely swept away by the scope, sheer force and adventurous nature of his symphonies. With this integral recording, Janowski and the orchestra finish a project that started with an acclaimed rendition of the 5th and 6th symphonies, released in 2019.

This comprehensive reissue of George Thorogood and The Destroyers' 'Live in Boston, 1982' captures the band's triumphant Bradford Ballroom concert in its entirety for the very first time. Full of energy, power, and focus, Thorogood and The Destroyers play a blistering set that includes such classics as 'Bad to the Bone', 'Who Do You Love?' and 'Move it on Over'. Newly remastered by the Grammy Award-winning engineer Paul Blakemore, the 27-track 'Live in Boston, 1982: The Complete Concert' adds 12 previously-unreleased tracks to the original 2010 release.

Antonio Vandini was born around 1690 in Bologna, the city where the cello knew its first glories as a solo instrument. He held several assignments in Bergamo, Venice and later Padua, where he developed a friendship with Giovanni Tartini. His virtuosity was brought to fame by Charles Burney who defined him the famous old Antonio Vandini on the violoncello who, the Italians say, plays and expresses a parlare, that is in such a manner as to make his instrument speak. Vandinis cello works are the apex of the instruments output of his time, for the persistent exploration of the high register, the frequent use of double stopping, arpeggios and chords even in unusual combinations, a variety of bowing techniques, and rapid passages. The works recorded on this release represent his complete output and are played by the specialist period ensemble L Arte dellArco, as usual on period instruments, using the original under-hand bow technique invented by Vandini himself.

Alphons Diepenbrock (1862-1921) is one of the most important Late-Romantic composers of The Netherlands. Despite is exceptional musical talents he became a teacher in classical languages.In Diepenbrock's works three influences are traceable: Wagner (a nearly inevitable influence for his generation..), Debussy (who actually also was influenced by Wagner, but later turned on him) and the Palestrina counterpoint.Most of Diepenbrock's works are vocals: songs, vocal ensembles and sacred works for choir and orchestra. This set presents his complete songs. The early songs are on Dutch and German texts, from 1910 on however all his songs were in the French language, mainly featuring Baudelaire and Verlaine.Excellent performers: Christoph Prégardien, Christa Pfeiler, Jard van Nes, Robert Holl are partnered on the piano by the eminent Rudolf Jansen.Another gem from the excellent back-catalogue of the NM Classics label, the label for Dutch music.

At a time when many of his contemporaries were exploring more fluid structures, Franz Schmidt while perhaps stretching tonal harmony to its limits, continued to embrace 19th-century form and achieved a highly personal synthesis of the diverse traditions of the Austro-German symphony. His language, rather than being wedded to a narrative of dissolution and tragedy is radiant and belligerently optimistic and reveals this scion of largely Hungarian forebears as the last great exponent of the style hongrois after Schubert, Liszt and Brahms.

Reclusive and eccentric, the French pianist– composer Charles-Valentin Alkan was also undoubtedly one of the greatest pianists who ever lived, and a composer who, like his friend and fellow virtuoso Liszt, pushed the boundaries of what his instrument, and human pianism, could achieve. Again like Liszt, he composed music that was not merely flashy and difficult to play it tapped a deep comprehension of music history and theory, a flair for the lyrical and the dramatic and of course a vast imagination.

Folke Nauta was prize winner at several national and international piano competitions. In 1992, as the youngest participant, he won the 2nd prize at the Queen Sonja International Music Competition in Oslo, Norway. A national breakthrough followed in 1994, when he won both 1st prize and the Dutch Press Prize at the Scheveningen International Music Competition.

An important contribution to the Beethoven Year: Christoph Scheffelt plays all the bagatelles and the famous Bagatelle No. 25 in A minor (WoO 59), commonly known as "Für Elise.” Christoph Scheffelt was born in 1981 in Santiago de Chile. In 2002 he completed his studies as a concert pianist with honors at the Universidad Católica de Chile with Prof. María Iris Radrigán. After four years of study with Prof. Rolf Plagge at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, he is awarded the title Magister Artium in 2006, also with honors. He completes his education, also with highest honors, as a master student of Prof. Homero Francesch at the Zurich University of the Arts. His concert activities, both as a soloist and as a member of the Eldering Ensemble, have taken him regularly through large parts of Western Europe, South America and Australia. Scheffelt is among others Winner of the renowned Rahn Music Prize, the “Claudio Arrau” Prize, as well as the Werner and Berti Alter Prize for Pedagogy.
