Confessions Of A Pop Group

Though they emerged alongside grunge acts like Nirvana and Pearl Jam, the Smashing Pumpkins were the group least influenced by traditional underground rock. Headed by principal songwriter and frontman Billy Corgan, they fashioned an amalgam of progressive rock, heavy metal, goth, psychedelia, and dream pop, creating a layered, powerful sound driven by swirling, distorted guitars that churned beneath Corgan's angst-ridden lyrics. One of the most visible alternative rock bands of the early '90s, they achieved mainstream success over the decade with classic releases Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness before entering an uneven and often tumultuous chapter that carried them into the 2000s.

Released in 2013 through Universal U.K., Classic Album Selection is a sharp, no-frills box set that contains the original U.K. versions of the Style Council's Introducing the Style Council (1983), Café Bleu (1984), Our Favourite Shop (1985), The Cost of Loving (1987), Confessions of a Pop Group (1988), and Modernism: A New Decade (recorded in 1989 but not released until 1998).

The Hollies' first album of original material following Graham Nash's departure was an attempt to regain the edge they'd had on Butterfly and Evolution albums, after the digression of the album of Dylan songs, the regrouping with Terry Sylvester in the lineup, and the unexpected hit achieved with "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother." It's a surprisingly strong album, not only in the songwriting (which includes the last Clark/Hicks/Nash song ever recorded, "Survival of the Fittest"), but also in the production, which isn't too far removed from what was heard on Butterfly and Evolution. There's no sitar here, but Tony Hicks – who is the real star of the group on this album – employs at least a half-dozen different guitars in uniquely fine voicings, and there is also some very striking use of orchestra, producer John Burgess making particularly fine employment of a string section as a lead instrument on the Allan Clarke/Terry Sylvester-authored "Man Without a Heart."

After leaving one of punk rock's all-time greatest bands, Paul Weller took things in a very different direction with the Style Council, which led to a wave of groans and moans from Jam loyalists who hung on Weller's every lyric. But steer away from the sneers and jeers and there are more than a few selections that Style Council performed that match those of the Jam…

Careful Confessions is the 2004 independently produced debut studio album by Sara Bareilles. In addition to seven studio tracks, the album features four songs recorded during live performances. Several of the songs on the album were re-recorded to appear on Bareilles' second album, Little Voice, her major label debut.
