This show, recorded in Paris in the '60s, features the Charles Mingus group with drummer Dannie Richmond, saxophonist Booker Ervin, and trumpeter Ted Curson. Mingus plays the piano solo on "Better Git It in Your Soul," and there is a guest appearance on "I'll Remember April" by Parisian resident and bop progenitor, Bud Powell. The sound is as recorded, not as broadcast on the radio, and coming from the beautiful Antibes Festival stage, it is remarkable. None of the strange reprocessing that was done in the States on the Mingus at Antibes set is happening here, giving this budget issue a much greater sonic presence. For the price you can't beat it.
Features 24 bit remastering and comes with a mini-description. Altoist Phil Woods' European Rhythm Machine was the most adventurous group he ever led, bordering on the avant-garde at times. The 1970 version (which includes pianist Gordon Beck, bassist Henri Texier and drummer Daniel Humair) is showcased on this 1986 reissue performing two group originals, Victor Feldman's "Joshua" and "Freedom Jazz Dance."
Venerable jazz bassist and session musician of choice, Buster Williams steers this thoroughly swinging quartet through a set of vibrant standards and original compositions along with an ace front line consisting of pianist Mulgrew Miller and vibist Steve Nelson. Recorded live in 1999 at the Montreux Jazz Festival, the bassist once again exhibits his seasoned musical persona via fluent lines, limber soloing, and a comprehensive sense of swing. Meanwhile, Nelson and Miller share most of the soloing opportunities as they consistently demonstrate a keen harmonic relationship atop drummer Carl Allen's masterstrokes and the leader's sinewy walking bass patterns.
