Harry Scott, a conscientious objector, literary figure, teacher, psychologist, and mountaineer, was killed on Mt Cook in 1960 when his son (the author) was two. This biography, autobiography, and social history resulted from the author's setting out to explore his father's life. Scott has published numerous articles and books, including poetry, and is Director of Studies in History at Downing College, Cambridge.
