Despite many members barely into their thirties, Grand General is a Norwegian super group of sorts. Ola Kvernberg is, perhaps, best-known internationally for a string of recordings that, including Folk (Jazzland, 2009) and the more ambitious Liarbird (Jazzland, 2011), have garnered the violinist/violist plaudits like the DnB NOR Award at the 2012 Kongsberg Jazz Festival. Guitarist Even Helte Hermansen has also garnered increasing attention at the helm of popular power trio Bushman's Revenge, whose Jitterbug Waltz (Rune Grammofon, 2010) demonstrated that it's possible to couch retro vibes in a modernist context.

General Maynyrd Band started when Dan Ingberman (guitar) had accumulated a bunch of songs that just didn’t fit with his band Crooked Flower. With his bandmates Daniel Erik (bass) and Pat Shields (drums and percussion) suggested that we put together a side project with Drew Southern (guitar) and Will Kyriazis (piano and keyboards), who in addition to playing on various Crooked Flower albums, was in another band called Hibbity Dibbity with Tom Relling (slide guitar), another old friend who had played with everyone.

By the time he was 14 year old, the Parisian Hervé Salters, also known as RV, and the man behind the electro-jazzy General Elektriks, was playing keyboards and synthesizers with local bands around London and Paris. Six years later, he had discovered the Clavinet, Wurlizter, Hammond B-3, and Fender Rhodes, the latter of which is highlighted on General Elektriks' debut album, Cliquety Kliqk. Salters' expertise with "vintage sound" led him to recording gigs on Femi Kuti's 1999 album Shoki Shoki, as well as tracks with Quannum Records members (and future labelmates) like Lyrics Born and the Lifesavas.

General Public - I'll Take You There (1994) is a cover of The Staple Singers' iconic song, reimagined by the British band General Public. Released as part of the soundtrack for the film Threesome, this version blends the original soulful vibe with a more upbeat, dance-rock style, characteristic of General Public's punk and new wave influences. The track was a commercial success, peaking at #22 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #38 on the Canadian RPM Top Singles year-end chart in 1994.
