"Ice on Fire", released in November 1985, is the nineteenth official album release for Elton John. Recorded at Sol Studios, it was his first album since 1976' "Blue Moves" produced by his original long-time producer, Gus Dudgeon, who was responsible for John's success in that timespan, but it was met with little praise, and only reached #48 on the US charts, although it reached #3 in the UK. George Michael, then of Wham!, appears on two tracks on the album: "Nikita" and "Wrap Her Up".

But the great joys of this collection are the hard-to-find gems previously unavailable to most collectors - songs like "(I Wanna) Testify," featuring a pre-P-Funk George Clinton, and two soul classics making their CD debut: Denise LaSalle's "Trapped By A Thing Called Love" is one of the last great Old School soul songs, recorded in 1971 as soul music was morphing into funk and disco; it appears here on a U.S. CD for the first time ever. And, Little Sister, a female trio featuring Sly Stone's younger sibling, is represented by two cuts, one of which - "You're the One (Parts 1 & 2 )" - has never been available on any CD anywhere!

Sandwiched between 1984's Top 20 hit Breaking Hearts and 1986's commercial disaster Leather Jackets, 1985's Ice on Fire is a forgotten Elton John effort. While it is hardly a masterpiece – it isn't even up to the standard of such '80s efforts as Too Low for Zero – it's still an enjoyable record, living proof of the power of professionalism…
