One of the great jazz pianists of all time, James P. Johnson was the king of stride pianists in the 1920s. He began working in New York clubs as early as 1913 and was quickly recognized as the pacesetter. In 1917, Johnson began making piano rolls. Duke Ellington learned from these (by slowing them down to half-speed), and a few years later, Johnson became Fats Waller's teacher and inspiration. During the '20s (starting in 1921), Johnson began to record, he was the nightly star at Harlem rent parties (accompanied by Waller and Willie "The Lion" Smith) and he wrote some of his most famous compositions during this period. For the 1923 Broadway show Running Wild (one of his dozen scores), Johnson composed "The Charleston" and "Old Fashioned Love," his earlier piano feature "Carolina Shout" became the test piece for other pianists, and some of his other songs included "If I Could Be with You One Hour Tonight" and "A Porter's Love Song to a Chambermaid."

This Japanese collection features mostly early Cliff Richard hits, beginning with his first, "Move It," which was released in 1958, through his so-called comeback years in the late 1970s, including his only U.S. hit, 1976's "Devil Woman." In the years after Elvis Presley but before the Beatles, Cliff Richard was the biggest thing in British rock & roll – and in the years after the Beatles, he was never far from the top of the U.K. charts. Arriving in 1958, just a couple of years after skiffle swept Britain, Richard was the first English singer to approximate the hip-shaking rebellion of American rock & roll with his 1958 debut single "Move It"…

Ella Jane Fitzgerald (April 25, 1917 – June 15, 1996) was an American jazz singer sometimes referred to as the First Lady of Song, Queen of Jazz, and Lady Ella. She was noted for her purity of tone, impeccable diction, phrasing, intonation, and a "horn-like" improvisational ability, particularly in her scat singing. After tumultuous teenage years, Fitzgerald found stability in musical success with the Chick Webb Orchestra, performing across the country but most often associated with the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem. Fitzgerald's rendition of the nursery rhyme "A-Tisket, A-Tasket" helped boost both her and Webb to national fame. After taking over the band when Webb died, Fitzgerald left it behind in 1942 to start her solo career.

It is in his organ music that Olivier Messiaen most perfectly expresses the originality and power of his temperament. The instrument was for a long time the privileged vehicle of spiritual meditation for Messiaen, who used it to explore all the possibilities of his instrumental language and succeeded in renewing his musical aesthetic without ever renouncing tradition.

This album is full of surprises and unpredictable music. Altoist Ernest Dawkins and his versatile sidemen perform a wide variety of originals. "Improvisation #1" (which was freely improvised in the studio) evolves from sound explorations to a riff section and back, while "Improvisation #2" is a lowdown but spacy blues. The longer pieces tend to be episodic and a little reminiscent of Charles Mingus in the way that they reinvent the past a bit to form a new and uncertain future. There are times when the group is not perfectly in-tune and Dawkins' soprano playing on "Bold Souls" makes one realize that it is probably his fourth best instrument. Much better is his fiery alto playing on "Dream for Rahsaan," a tribute to Roland Kirk. The final three numbers are consistently exciting, trumpeter Ameen Muhammad adds power to the group, trombonist Steve Berry blends well with Dawkins' alto, and the pianoless rhythm section (guitarist Jeffery Parker, bassist Yosef Ben Israel, and drummer Reggie Nicholson) is alert and driving. This is a highly recommended disc that keeps alive the Chicago AACM tradition.

Since this is pianist Matthew Shipp's first session with David S. Ware (and only his second recording date ever), it's safe to say Great Bliss, Volume 1 is the launching pad for the quartet that helped make the tenor saxophonist's name and reputation. Conceived from the start as a two-CD project, it finds the leader intent on establishing his multi-instrumentalist credentials with three tracks featuring him on saxello, two on flute, one on stritch, and just two on his main axe.
