By far the most revered album from the Boston kings of “low-rock,” Cure For Pain placed eighth on the Alternative Nation site’s Top 10 underrated 90s Alternative Rock Albums list. For the first time this title is remastered from the original source for the most immersive and sonically-mind blowing experience on wax to ever be available. In addition, this has been expanded to a deluxe 2LP set on 180-gram vinyl that includes new-to-vinyl B-Sides, as well as previously unreleased alternates and demos from the sessions.

Pay attention to the dates in the title of The Best of Morphine 1992-1995. That chronological spread means it's not a career-spanning best-of, but only covers their early career, with nothing from their final albums for the DreamWorks label.

Morphine's discography was cut tragically short, but with Rykodisc holding the keys to the vaults, and with a heck of a lot of unissued material (at least 60 tracks), the label released a second compilation of Morphine B-sides to mark the ten-year anniversary of the unexpected death of singer/slide bassist Mark Sandman. Like 1997's B-Sides & Otherwise, At Your Service is more abstract and challenging than the other studio releases available. Many of the songs here take a more free-form approach, potentially because they were never completely finished. Even so, the songs sound great, and with 35 previously unreleased songs, there's a lot to sort through and a lot to like.

Morphine's fourth studio release, 1997's Like Swimming, was a bit of a disappointment when compared to such stellar earlier releases as Cure for Pain and Yes. After singer/two-string bassist Mark Sandman died of a heart attack on-stage in 1999, many Morphine fans assumed that Like Swimming would be the band's swansong thankfully, it wasn't. The Boston trio completed their fifth album just prior to Sandman's untimely passing, entitled The Night, and it's definitely an improvement over its predecessor. Whereas many of the songs on their previous album sounded unfinished and rushed, The Night sounds like a fully realized work.

Morphine leader Mark Sandman was the inventor of a sound called "low rock" — the distinctive blend of sonorous saxophone, bass and deep grooves that, along with Mark’s lyric poetry, propelled Morphine to fame. But Mark created much more than the brilliant music of Morphine. He was a tireless musical experimenter who wrote and recorded constantly throughout his life. Although Morphine and the seminal swamp-blues quartet Treat Her Right became well known and successful, much of his work was never commercially released and remains unheard — except by his large circle of friends, who he regularly commandeered to critique his latest, usually over a bottle of Patron.

I Gave You Diamonds, You Give Me Disease is a Rolling Stones bootleg featuring outtakes from Exile On Main St. There are a number of different Exile boots out there but I always liked this combination. Sister Morphine Records made this.

When drummer and composer Allison Miller auspiciously debuted her Boom Tic Boom band on a self-titled offering in 2010, the group was just coming together. The results were remarkable. Miller's disciplined progressive jazz compositions proved wildly knotty, martial, full of humor and invention by pianist Myra Melford, bassist Todd Sickafoose, and violinist Jenny Scheinman. In the three intervening years, the group has matured by playing together whenever the opportunity presented itself. Recorded over three days at Fantasy Studios, No Morphine No Lillies is, if anything, an even more far-reaching affair. Scheinman, for one, has been further integrated into the ensemble, whereas she played a lesser role on the debut.

Hybrid Love is out TODAY!!!! What dream come true! Written and recorded by me, mixed by Will Waikart, and mastered by TJ Lipple. Many thanks to friends and family for support, both creative and technical. Please add, follow, and share if you like what you hear! I will be featuring each of the 5 songs over the coming weeks. Each song is a little story - as it should be - and I spent a lot of time trying to make sure the lyrics read well. Today I celebrate the release of the EP by featuring track 1, 'Racing Hearts', a rock waltz with a soaring, epic climax. This is the oldest song of the group and was re-written too many times to count, but I always felt it could be one of my best ones. Simply put, it's a story of letting go, and seeing things from a broader perspective.
