D.J. Rogers was one of the '70s/'80s most hyped artists; many didn't fall for the hype, though most critics praised him to high heaven. RCA, his first label, spent the bucks but crapped out. This CBS debut treads familiar ground, full-blown productions with everybody and their mothers in the studio. "Love Brought Me Back," the best track, is a happy groove that becomes redundant and unessential after a few plays. A prolific songwriter, musician, and singer, D.J. Rogers' recordings lacked an unidentifiable something, and he sounded like a lot of different soul singers rolled into one. His sales suffered, not from lack of promotion, but from lack of fan support. Few called radio stations to request a D. J. Rogers song, his most successful recording achieved the "lofty" ranking of number 20 R&B; despite the monies spent on his career he never came close to the Pop Top 40. The first side is OK, but side two, except for a couple of songs, is uninspired and hackneyed.
