Son premier album ne sort qu’en octobre 2021, pourtant Chelsea Carmichael traine ses guêtres sur la bouillonnante scène jazz londonienne depuis un certain temps. Au sein de SEED Ensemble ou comme sidewoman de Theon Cross, Joe Armon-Jones, de l’Outlook Orchestra et du Neue Grafik Ensemble, la saxophoniste née à Warrington (entre Liverpool et Manchester) et installée à Londres depuis ses études au Trinity Conservatoire a déjà imposé son souffle surpuissant. Un grondement chaud assez inspiré de celui de son aîné Shabaka Hutchings, ce qui se comprend lorsqu’on apprend que la saxophoniste qui fait figure de parrain de cette scène anglaise produit The River Doesn’t Like Strangers et le publie sur son propre label, Native Rebel !

Together they perform well-known compositions such as "Caravan," "Chelsea Bridge," and "Lotus Blossom," as well as tunes that are not usually played by quartets such as "In My Solitude." The two soloists, Jackson and Hazeltine explore the bluesier and moodier side of Ellington's music as well as ballads like "Warm Valley" and slightly more up-tempo tunes like "In a Sentimental Mood".

You can place this into the category of great albums that you (probably) have not heard. Insight is a late 80's release that has an instrumental pop flavor with a sophisticated foundation. David is somehow a shadow master who is one of the finest players that has graced my ears but still seems to be unknown to most. To touch on his credentials he has toured with top acts including Tower of Power, Christopher Cross, James Taylor, and Paul Simon.
