DJ Pogo – Pulp Fusion: Revival Boogie Down

The CD set comes with a booklet that has capsule descriptions of each track. One track, "Fire Eater" by Rusty Bryant had really struck me, particularly the funky organ playing. The blurb in the booklet raved about Bryant's "emotional and raw" sax playing, and also acknowledged the contributions from the great drummer Idris Muhammed.

After a botched attempt at a 'DJ Remix' Best Of and and a disappointing excursion into disco tack, the Pulp Fusion series is reassuringly back on form with two cds worth of hard-as-nails soul, funk & jazz grooves from the golden age of black music. Compiled by New York DJ Monk One (don't worry, I'd never heard of him before either) the tunes are what you would expect on a Pulp Fusion compilation - tough, intense, often obscure, and sometimes uncompromising. If you're not familiar with the Pulp Fusion series I might start with an earlier volume, but if you are already a fan you'll be pleased that things are back to normal. ~Amazon

Another outstanding array of funky tracks with loads of groove from the producers of Pulp Fusion. The songs on this album vary greatly within the funk style, but the bottom line is they are all brilliant classics in their own right.

This is a brilliant album! Jam packed with tracks from some of the legends of jazz, soul and funk. All the tracks are good though. The compilation allows you to expand your current collection by providing you tidbits from different artists.

A fine collection of groovy and funky stuff. Not everythings is as apealing as Dizzy's Matrix or Brother Jach McDuff's tune (altough i can think of even better tracks with Newman). Bedies other tunes from famous artist/bands there were still some fine things to discover for me. I knew Frank Strazzeri's Cloudburst from a Big Cheese sampler but it's always worth to listen to.

Mercan Dede (Arkın Ilıcalı) is a Turkish composer, ney and bendir player, DJ and producer. He divides his time between Turkey, Europe and North America. He is a world music artist, playing a fusion of (traditionally acoustic) Turkish and other oriental musics with electronic sounds. The sound of Dede incorporates traditional instruments and other parts of the world, with horns, drum'n'bass dance beats, ambient electronic music and a sufi spirituality. Mercan Dede made his U.S. debut at the 1st Globalfest that year, followed by a North American tour and the release of the album "Fusion Monster" under the name Arkin Allen, a slightly different twist on his familiar sound. The album is Mercan Dede's flawed, personal effort to reflect his own spiritual journey.
