Dr. Carl's Colonoscopy

This book presents state of the art knowledge and guidance on the use of therapeutic colonoscopy for all of the usual indications, including hemostasis for colorectal bleeding, resection of benign and malignant lesions, and decompression and recanalization of obstructed bowel. Technical aspects are covered in detail, with advice on indications and instrumentation and provision of tips and tricks of proven practical value.

It is fitting that the first book to be published on the new subject of virtual colonoscopy takes the form of an atlas with an abundance of images. Radiolo­ gists approaching this exciting new technique for detecting colorectal neoplasms will rely on their traditional radiological knowledge gained from experience with several different tools, including computed tomography scanning, double­ contrast barium enema, computer image processing, and, of course, conventional colonoscopic findings.

Carl August Nielsen was a Danish composer, conductor and violinist, widely recognized as his country's most prominent composer.Brought up by poor yet musically talented parents on the island of Funen, he demonstrated his musical abilities at an early age. He initially played in a military band before attending the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen from 1884 until December 1886. He premiered his Op. 1, Suite for Strings, in 1888, at the age of 23. The following year, Nielsen began a 16-year stint as a second violinist in the Royal Danish Orchestra under the conductor Johan Svendsen, during which he played in Giuseppe Verdi's Falstaff and Otello at their Danish premieres. In 1916, he took a post teaching at the Royal Danish Academy and continued to work there until his death.

To publish a book on colonoscopy suitable for an international medical audience, drawing upon the expertise and talents of many outstanding world-wide clinicians, is a daunting task.
