CLASSIC 1993 STEELY DAN BROADCAST, COMPLETELY REMASTERED Following the tumultuous albeit fruitful recording of their 1980 album Gaucho, and their subsequent breakup soon thereafter, the next decade was somewhat quiet for Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, the gifted musical duo behind Steely Dan. Despite a number of producer credits to their respective names, the only releases that appeared with either as featured artist were two Donald Fagen solo records. The first, The Nightfly, came out to rapturous critical and commercial success, going Platinum on both sides of the Atlantic. Meanwhile, Becker was listed as an as an official member of China Crisis on their 1985 album Flaunt the Imperfection.

During the 17th and 18th centuries, Naples’ fame as a musical centre attracted travellers, composers, instrumentalists and virtuoso singers alike. Among the aspiring musicians, the most highly-trained and sought-after were the castrati, promising boys aged between 8 and 12 who were subjected to an operation intended to preserve the exceptionally pure timbre of their treble voice. Forever virginal beings whose superhuman voices mesmerized their listeners they were nicknamed angiolilli, ‘little angels’, and sang in the most important churches and theatres of ‘Castrapolis’, a term coined to describe the southern capital and its high concentration of castrato sopranos.

For Dan, the future means meeting new people and embarking on new ventures. Music brings people together and takes them beyond the commonplace, in a setting where artists congregate and interact.

Strawberry Mansion is an American surrealist science fiction adventure romantic comedy film directed and written by Albert Birney and Kentucker Audley.Daniel Deacon is an American composer and electronic musician based in Baltimore, Maryland.Deacon is renowned for his live shows, where large-scale audience participation and interaction is often a major element of the performance. His work as a film composer includes scoring the 2021 documentaries All Light, Everywhere and Ascension, both released as soundtrack albums by Milan Records, as well as Francis Ford Coppola'sTwixt (with Osvaldo Golijov).

Steely Dan enjoyed a highly successful run of albums in the 70s, but by the release of Gaucho in 1980, Donald Fagan and Walter Becker had dissolved the band to concentrate on solo projects. The early 90s saw the duo working together again and after Becker had played on and produced Fagans Kamakiriad they decided to hit the road as Steely Dan again. This two CD set chronicles the critically acclaimed tour with a prized KLLT-FM broadcast of their performance at the Riverport Amphitheatre in Maryland Heights, Missouri on September 1, 1993. On his new album Inventions / Reinventions, pianist-composer Dan Tepfer performs each of Bach’s beloved 15 Two Part Inventions interleaved in chromatic sequence by 9 of his own free improvisations in the “missing” keys to create a new full, and fully transporting 24-key experience, a 55-minute mix of the timeless and the contemporary.

Plus de 10 ans après son album Goldberg Variations / Variations, une approche du chef-d’œuvre baroque du compositeur allemand dans un cadre préexistant, le pianiste Dan Tepfer va plus loin encore et nous offre une exploration plus intuitive et radicalement différente dans l’œuvre du maître. La musique de Bach permettant les moments de liberté qu’il prend sur Inventions / Reinventions, cette fois il improvise le cadre et réagit, explique t-il, « à quelque chose de plus abstrait, à la façon dont Bach s’engage dans la narration.» Quand il improvise c’est de son propre jardin qu’il extrait la sève tout en se servant des « mécanismes fondamentaux de l’harmonie tonale comme Bach l’a fait.»
