David Bowie returned to relatively conventional rock & roll with Scary Monsters, an album that effectively acts as an encapsulation of all his '70s experiments. Reworking glam rock themes with avant-garde synth flourishes, and reversing the process as well, Bowie creates dense but accessible music throughout Scary Monsters. Though it doesn't have the vision of his other classic records, it wasn't designed to break new ground – it was created as the culmination of Bowie's experimental genre-shifting of the '70s. As a result, Scary Monsters is Bowie's last great album. While the music isn't far removed from the post-punk of the early '80s, it does sound fresh, hip, and contemporary, which is something Bowie lost over the course of the '80s.

Austin, Texas-based guitarist and singer/songwriter Omar Kent Dykes fits the stereotypical image some have of an American blues musician: he's tall, wears cowboy boots, and has a deep voice with a Southern accent. But although Dykes looks rough and tough, he's actually an incredibly peaceful and intelligent musician, and a veteran at working a crowd in a blues club or a festival. While Dykes has a sizable American audience owing to his albums for Columbia Records, he has spent a good portion of his touring years at festivals and clubs around Europe. Omar Kent Dykes was born in 1950, in McComb, Mississippi, the same town from which Bo Diddley hailed. He first set foot into neighborhood juke joints at age 12 and after he'd been playing guitar for a while, he went back into the juke joints. After graduating from high school, Dykes lived in Hattiesburg and Jackson, Mississippi for a few years before relocating to Austin in 1976. He'd heard the blues scene in Texas was heating up.

Too Slim and the Taildraggers is an American rock band formed in 1986 in Spokane, Washington, United States. The band currently consists of Tim "Too Slim" Langford (lead vocals, guitar), Robert Kearnes (bass, vocals) and Jeffrey "Shakey" Fowlkes (drums). The band is located in Nashville, Tennessee, United States. Tom Brimm (bass) and John Cage (drums) were both early members of the group. To date, Too Slim and the Taildraggers have released 13 studio albums and five live albums. The Fortune Teller (2007), Free Your Mind (2009) Shiver (2011) "Blue Heart" (2013) ""Blood Moon" (2016) all charted in the Top 10 of the Billboard Top Blues Albums, peaking at numer 3 numbers 9, 8 and 9 respectively.
