Ziggy Stardust wrote the blueprint for David Bowie's hard-rocking glam, and Aladdin Sane essentially follows the pattern, for both better and worse. A lighter affair than Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane is actually a stranger album than its predecessor, buoyed by bizarre lounge-jazz flourishes from pianist Mick Garson and a handful of winding, vaguely experimental songs. Bowie abandons his futuristic obsessions to concentrate on the detached cool of New York and London hipsters, as on the compressed rockers "Watch That Man," "Cracked Actor," and "The Jean Genie." Bowie follows the hard stuff with the jazzy, dissonant sprawls of "Lady Grinning Soul," "Aladdin Sane," and "Time," all of which manage to be both campy and avant-garde simultaneously, while the sweepingly cinematic "Drive-In Saturday" is a soaring fusion of sci-fi doo wop and melodramatic teenage glam.

BOWIE S 1996 CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE ANNUAL BRIDGE SCHOOL BENEFIT CONCERT In October 1996, Neil and Pegi Young s Bridge School Benefit concert series was 10 years old, having kicked off a decade earlier in 86. At Bridge X , as the 96 event was known, the all-star line-up included, Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Pearl Jam, Billy Idol, Patti Smith, Pete Townshend, Bonnie Raitt and Cowboy Junkies. David Bowie also performed, playing acoustic sets on both days of the benefit gig - October 19th & 20th - alongside regular 90s band members Reeves Gabrels and Gail Ann Dorsey. Performing a stellar selection from the back catalogue, with an impromptu version of the Coasters I m A Hog For You Baby thrown in too for good measure, all played acoustically by Bowie (his team had a few volts passing through their respective bass and guitar), this rare recording is now available for the first time on this CD.

Since David Bowie spent the '90s jumping from style to style, it comes as a shock that Hours, his final album of the decade, is a relatively straightforward affair. Not only that, but it feels unlike anything else in his catalog. Bowie's music has always been a product of artifice, intelligence, and synthesis. Hours is a relaxed, natural departure from this method. Arriving after two labored albums, the shift in tone is quite refreshing. "Thursday's Child," the album's engaging mid-tempo opener, is a good indication of what lays ahead. It feels like classic Bowie, yet recalls no specific era of his career. For the first time, Bowie has absorbed all the disparate strands of his music, from Hunky Dory through Earthling.

In late December 2015 a new David Bowie box set was announced that would be focused on his rise to rock stardom in the early 70’s. With the dawning of the new year, news that the music world feared came true, that Bowie had been seriously ill for years and had passed away. Like when most celebrities pass away, interest and demand for their output rises and it took me a bit of work to secure a copy of this box, in anticipation of its arrival I used the time to pour back over David’s back catalog of this era, from The Man Who Sold The World through Aladdin Sane as well as the few official live records, the brilliant Santa Monica 72 show, the Ziggy soundtrack, and the David Live were all in steady rotation.
