Wells arrived from Memphis fully formed but possessing a rawness that he would always maintain at the age of 18 as an energetic blues harp wizard and a vocalist with an intense and expressive borderline R&B style, schooled back in Memphis by his cousin, Little Junior "Mystery Train" Parker. It would be hard to name another 18-year-old in his rookie year of recording who ever put out a double-sided single as strong and as iconic as Wells's second one: "Hoodoo Man" (originally by Sonny Boy Williamson #1), which became one of his signature numbers, b/w his own original instrumental, "Junior's Wail," the title song of this collection. (Be careful when listening to the latter, as your jaw may hit the floor around the 0:54 mark.)

Shambolic - not a word often used to describe musicians, their recordings or their careers but in the case of Rosco Gordon it seems to fit. Certainly his piano stylings are often referred to as shambolic, however his looping piano style and his ability to place an accent on the offbeat helped to form the foundation of bluebeat and ska in Jamaica. Presented here are the A & B sides of every release he made up to 1961, major hits include "Booted", "No More Doggin'", "Saddle The Cow" plus great tracks such as "Just A Little Bit". This is the first time his exciting recordings have been presented in this way. An undeniably original talent whose contributions to the development of popular music cannot underestimated and this collection fully demonstrates that.

Here are 31 examples of his legacy, 30 of which he wrote himself including the hits "Those Lonely, Lonely Nights", "Always A First Time", "Trick Bag" which was later revived by Robert Palmer and "Come On (Part 1 & Part 2)" which went on to be covered by guitar stars Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Anson Funderburgh. Several tracks are making their CD debut (at the time of release).

When the greats of rockabilly are discussed, it's never long before the name of Ronnie Self comes into the conversation. A man who lived his life close to the edge, and whose recordings frequently sounded like he did, Self never had a hit of his own and made no more than a handful of 45s during Rock 'n' Roll's heyday - but virtually all of them are considered genre classics.

As Lefty Frizzell is deemed to be to be the father of modern country singing, the same thing can be said about Rose Maddox's abiding influence on women in country. From the age of 12, Rose and her brothers Cal, Fred and Henry were 'America's Most Colourful Hillbilly Band', with sister Rose's sometimes plaintive, sometimes sassy voice establishing a template that would be followed by many of the biggest female stars of the 1950s and beyond - among them Wanda Jackson, Skeeter Davis and Jean Shepard.

Willie Mae 'Big Mama' Thornton was the first artist to record the then little known song written by two Los Angeles based teenagers, Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, 'Hound Dog'. The song was the only chart record 'Big Mama' enjoyed and of course it went on to be recorded by a young lad called Elvis Presley who took the track to No. 1 on the pop charts for 11 weeks. This is the first collection to feature the A & B sides of all her released singles between 1951 and 1961. 28 excellent R&B tracks and another superb addition to Jasmine's ever growing blues and R&B catalogue.

German compilation features all the T. Rex A-sides released between 1972 & 1978 on disc one & 28 B-sides on disc two, 16 page colour booklet. First, full disclosure is necessary as to what's missing. Ready? On this glorious double-CD collection, there isn't one track from T. Rex's Electric Warrior. That's right, "Bang a Gong," "Mambo Sun," and "Jeepster" are all absent. Why? Simple: it appears Warner is recalcitrant to license that wondrous album to anyone in any form. It turns out that this is simply a small complaint because none of the tracks from Electric Warrior should be separated from its full corpus anyway – it is an album in the purest and more literal sense of the world. Getting to what is here, listeners do get tracks from that beautiful slab The Slider as well as Tanx, Light of Love , Bolan's Zip Gun, Dandy in the Underworld, Futuristic Dragon, and a slew of 45s never issued on LP.
