Della Reese was born Deloreese Patricia Early on July 6, 1931 in Detroit, Michigan and began singing in her local church from an early age. In late 1953 Della signed on with The Erskine Hawkins Orchestra and moved to New York and soon had a recording contract with Jubilee Records. Duke Ellington really needs no introduction, being considered by many as the greatest American composer of the 20th Century. His orchestra, over its 50 plus years of performing and recording, launched the careers of many of jazz's greatest stars. The line up for this 1962 performance still featured such respected alumni as Ray Nance, Johnny Hodges and Paul Gonsalves. This unique live concert broadcast featuring Della Reese and The Duke Ellington Orchestra was recorded on February 13, 1962 in New York City as part of a radio series specifically designed to promote a National Guard recruiting effort.

Delloreese Patricia Early (July 6, 1931 – November 19, 2017), known professionally as Della Reese, was an American jazz and gospel singer, actress, and ordained minister whose career spanned seven decades. Her long career began as a singer, scoring a hit with her 1959 single "Don't You Know?". In the late 1960s she hosted her own talk show, Della, which ran for 197 episodes. From 1975 she also starred in films, playing opposite Redd Foxx in Harlem Nights (1989), Martin Lawrence in A Thin Line Between Love and Hate (1996) and Elliott Gould in Expecting Mary (2010). Reese achieved continued success in the religious television drama Touched by an Angel (1994–2003), in which she played the leading role of Tess.

The pun in the title of Della Reese's most popular album for RCA Victor refers to the musical basis for these 12 songs: classical pieces originally composed by Tchaikovsky ("Symphony No. 6," "Melodie Op. 42"), Debussy ("Reverie"), Schubert ("Serenade"), Chopin ("Etude in E, Op. 10 No. 3," "Polonaise No. 6 Op. 53"), and Puccini ("Musetta's Waltz Song" from La Boheme), among others. The idea is a full-length expansion of her 1959 single, "Don't You Know," one of the biggest hits of her career (and also included here). Fortunately, Della Reese's voice – as strong, controlled, and pitch-perfect as it had proven in the past – is up to the challenge of such heavy material. Meanwhile, Glenn Osser's arrangements are gauzy and string-heavy, quite suited for the material and Reese's vocals. Though it's not a definitive performance, Reese admirably stretches her grasp of popular song by assimilating pieces from the classical repertoire.

Voice of an Angel, is some of Ms Reese's best music. If one has the talent, and knowledge, of good pop music then one would be able to rate this disc in the correct order. Of course, in my opinion, it would have to occupy the top spot. My wife and I had the pleasure of seeing Ms Reese perform at the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas circa: late '50's–early '60's. It was a night to remember. "And Now" is a beautiful song, backed great musicians, that will live forever. However, seeing, and hearing Ms Reese, live on stage is an experience that one will be with me forever. Of course, I'm biased because I, love Ms Reese, and her music. I, urge all, who is not familiar with her, to get acquainted with Voice of an Angel. ~ orbie harris

Avid Jazz continues with its Four Classic Album series with a re-mastered 2CD release from Della Reese, complete with original artwork, liner notes and personnel details 'The Story of the Blues'; 'The Classic Della'; 'Della By Starlight' and 'What Do You Know About Love' Born in 1931, Delloreese Patricia Early, began singing gospel music at an early age and was hired to sing in Mahalia Jackson's gospel group at age, only 11! Changing her name to Della Reese she began performing in nightclubs and fell under the influence of the great female jazz singers of the age, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and Billie Holiday. Her singing career was defined by two long spells with major record companies, in 1953 she signed to Jubilee and later in 1959 to RCA. Our four fine selections show off the best of Della from both these periods.

Jazz / Traditional Pop / Blues / Vocal Jazz / Cha-Cha-Cha

This is a great combo of two albums by Della that works well together. "Swing Slow" is a group of standards given Della's touch that will keep you entranced. And "Cha-Cha-Cha" is just that–-standards set to cha-cha-cha. Lots of fun and great listening. Her version of "Whatever Lola Wants" cha-cha is steamy and sexy. If you like Della Reese then this is for you. It's a collectors' item and a great reminder that the star of "Touched By An Angel" was (and still is I hope) a great American vocalist with no fear of expressing herself. This CD is a wonderful vintage example.

The original soundtrack for Neil LaBute's Nurse Betty features innocent, classic pop songs that capture the sweetly delusional state of the film's title character. Jula De Palma and Pink Martini's versions of the lighthearted standard "Whatever Will Be, Will Be (Que Sera Sera)" bookend songs like Ricky Nelson's "Poor Little Fool," Ann-Margret's "Slowly," and Della Reese's "Don't You Know," and selections from Rolfe Kent's quirky original score complete this enjoyable companion to one of 2000's most unique films.
