Tudor England was a place of religious upheaval and uncertainty, as the Catholic church was replaced by the Church of England, with Henry VIII at its head. When Henry VIII passed through Canterbury in 1532, a young woman named Elizabeth Barton, known as the Holy Maid of Kent and widely revered as a visionary, warned him that he was 'so abominable in the sight of God that he was not worthy to tread on hallowed ground'. Two years later she was executed as an enemy of the state, but she would not be the last to be punished for her faith – the summer of 1535 would see many others suffer the same fate.

In 2009, New York observed the 400-year anniversary of Henry Hudson's September 1609 discovery of Manhattan Island. This book chronicles the event from the perspective of the people who met Hudson's boat—which they at first thought was surely a great waterfowl—floating. Using all available sources, including oral history passed down to today's Algonquins, Evan Pritchard tells the story from various perspectives: that of Hudson's body guard, scribe, and personal Judas, Robert Juet; that of Hudson himself; and that of the Eastern Algonquins who greeted Hudson as the fulfillment of ancient prophecies.

In 2015, Sam Brakeley stood at a crossroads in his life. His long-time girlfriend was moving to Utah, with or without him, and he was torn between following her or remaining in New England with family, friends, and the land he loved. So he set out to complete the Catamount Trail, a 330-mile cross-country ski trail that runs across Vermont from the Massachusetts border to Canada. He took advantage of his time in the woods to reach a decision—and brought Henry Knox along for the trip. In 1775, Knox undertook a winter journey of similar length, retrieving dozens of artillery pieces from the recently captured Fort Ticonderoga on Lake Champlain and dragging them 300 miles through snow and cold to Cambridge, Massachusetts, to help George Washington drive the entrenched British army from Boston.
