Dennis Coffey's Sussex label debut remains his most consistent and rewarding LP, not to mention his most commercially successful. Evolution delivers precisely what its title promises, spotlighting Coffey's growth as a guitarist and as a composer. Its infectious centerpiece "Scorpio" reached the R&B Top Ten, buoyed by Coffey's ear-grabbing guitar intro and a Hall of Fame drum break that is the source for an endless number of samples. The leadoff cut, "Getting It On," has proven no less fecund, its opening guitars and Andrew Smith's drums bit off by both the Beastie Boys and Public Enemy. But Evolution also charts the development of Coffey's skills as an arranger, cherry-picking elements of rock, funk, and soul to create a unique sound not too far removed from jazz fusion. Somehow he even transforms Led Zeppelin's blues-rock behemoth "Whole Lotta Love" into a vacuum-packed funk groove.

Legendary Detroit arranger, producer and guitarist Dennis Coffey released ‘Evolution’ in 1971 and sampled-heads will know the importance of the breakbeat funk of ‘Scorpio’ – much sampled in the hip-hop world, but also check the driving groove of ‘Getting It On’. The heavily percussive ‘Son Of Scorpio’ develops the theme while the funker ‘Theme From Enter The Dragon’ is classic 70s soundtrack action. The clavinet laced ‘Can You Feel It’ is also another highlight on a set that includes 11 bonus cuts mainly lifted from the ‘Electric Coffey’ LP as well as the ten that made up the original album.

Although its myriad zodiac-inspired titles might suggest that Electric Coffey does little but rehash the punishing funk of Dennis Coffey's classics "Scorpio" and "Taurus," in truth it ranks alongside the guitarist's most ambitious and accomplished LPs, exploring a vast swath of musical geography spanning from psychedelic soul to blues-rock. A monster drum break and deep-fried production conspire to make "Son of Scorpio" the sought-after cut among DJs, but Electric Coffey is much more than the sum of its parts. Coffey empties out his bag of studio tricks for "Capricorn's Thing" and "The Sagittarian," while "Love Song for Libra" and the acoustic "Lonely Moon Child" illustrate a newfound grasp of atmosphere and nuance.

Dennis Coffey’s first recording date was in the 1950s, when he was only 15. Years later, he would become a member of The Funk Brothers, playing on hits like Edwin Starr’s “War” and laying down the solo on The Temptations’ “Ball Of Confusion.” He also performed on tracks with Parliament/Funkadelic, Wilson Pickett, Chairmen Of The Board, and produced Cold Fact for Rodriguez. That’s some resume!

UK four CD set. Includes the albums Rock Until You Drop (1981), Wiped Out (1982), All For One (1983), and Live At The Inferno. Although Raven's origins date as far back as 1974, they came to the attention of the British rock media with the 1980 release of their debut single, 'Don't Need Your Money'. Hailing from Newcastle, it seemed inevitable that brothers John and Mark Gallagher, on bass guitar/lead vocals and lead guitar respectively, joined by drummer Rob Wacko Hunter, would sign to Newcastle based NWOBHM (New Wave Of British Heavy Metal) label Neat Records, alongside other NWOBHM luminaries Venom, Fist and White Spirit. A big influence on future thrash metal legends such as Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax, their highly-energized form of speed metal became the self-styled "athletic rock", a genre that would extend to the band wearing of baseball and American football apparel on stage.

Gordon Lightfoot is a genre unto himself. Neither pop nor folk nor country nor rock, his music is unvarnished, direct, a statement from one heart to another (as Lightfoot has stated, “I like to keep things simple. I don’t like to make them complicated”). And this uncompromising stance has not only made him a legend (particularly in his native Canada, where he is a full-fledged icon), but also, somewhat paradoxically, brought him huge commercial success (which, ironically, has in turn caused some to discount his prodigious songwriting talent). For Gordon Lightfoot never set out to be a “popular” singer-songwriter. When he signed with Warner Bros. and began working with producer Lenny Waronker, Lightfoot thought of himself as an album artist, and, indeed, the Lightfoot-Waronker songwriter-producer partnership (with a brief period with Joe Wissert as producer) yielded nine charting albums—and that’s not even counting the compilations—highlighted by a #1 slot for 1974’s Sundown.
