Haitink leads the Concertgebouw Orchestra in these distinguished recordings of Ravel's major orchestral scores that probably remain among the best available. Most noteworthy are his interpretations of Bolero, Alborada del Gracioso and La Valse on the first CD; La Mere d'Oye and Daphnis et Chloe on the second.

The Austrian composer Walter Bricht (1904-1970) was one of many musicians of Jewish ancestry who fled Vienna after the Anschluss for the safety of the USA; Bricht became a valued professor at Indiana University in Bloomington. Fittingly, it is the nearby Fort Wayne Philharmonic, in its own debut recording, that has made the first album of Brichts music. The recording reveals another major Viennese voice and points to yet another potentially important career cut off in the bud by the Nazis. Bricht was reportedly Franz Schmidts favorite student, and the late-Romantic styles of the two men are indeed very closely aligned in their mix of Baroque counterpoint, Classical form and Wagnerian chromatic harmony: Brichts Symphony in A minor might almost be Schmidts No. 5.

A great American orchestra, playing great American music. And fantastic sound too! Listen on a good highly resolving system and be amazed at this overlooked gem. It should be on an audiophiles list of demo-discs.

The scores of composer Michael Fine are born from his improvisations on the piano and are nourished by his travels and his readings: his music derives from a poetic imagination and carries therefore lots of visual evocations. From Korea and its palaces (At the Gate) to Scotland and the writer Alexander McCall Smith (Brother Fox), the world and its landscapes pass by over the seasons (Seasonal Rites) as you listen to it.

This set has been in currency since 1994 (there is another of the Vermeulen chamber music CV39-41) . It is a monument not only to Vermeulen's music but also to the great work of the Donemus Foundation, the Vermeulen Estate and the enlightened support of the Nederlands Government. The Apennine spine of the set is the septet of symphonies running 1912-1965. All but No 5 are in a single movement; the fifth is in three. In the foothills are three extracts from his own The Flying Dutchman (1930) and the song for soprano and orchestra La Veille (1917 arr 1932).

The opulent soundworld of a Dutch late-Romantic master, still too little known outside his native country.
Rarefied spirituality and refined sensuousness are the hallmarks of Hendrik Andriessen's (1892-1981) idiom, which offers an ethereal synthesis of Franckian chromaticism with an individual interpretation of classical forms and church modes. Though he trained as an organist, his writing for other solo instruments is fluent and idiomatic. The concertos for violin, cello and oboe share the silken textures of his better-known orchestral music, and this album won glowing reviews when first released in 2000.

One of the blessings of recorded sound is that it gives today‘s audiences opportunities to hear great masters of the past. And Arturo Toscanini surely was a master — perhaps the most towering Maestro of the 20th century. Since the Toscanini Collection was first released on compact disc approximately a decade ago, major innovations have occured in sound restoration. Although the recordings in that collection were issued utilizing the best techniques of the time, it is now possible to go back to the original sources and make more musical and accurate remasterings. The recordings in this new series were made using 20-bit recording technology, UV22 Super CD Encoding, Cello and Studer tape systems and were processed from the original analog source tape masters at the BMG/RCA Studios in New York. The improvement in sound clearly justifies a new release of these unique interpretations.
