Long-time duo partners Peter Hill and Benjamin Frith mark the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth with this survey of his complete output for piano four hands. Works from his early years in Bonn and from the period of the ‘Eroica’ Symphony, a decade later, are joined by a unique masterpiece from the year before his death. In 1826 Beethoven was persuaded to publish an arrangement for piano duet of the Grosse Fuge, finale of the String Quartet in B flat Op 130, which had astonished and bewildered listeners at the Quartet’s first performance. He took great care over the arrangement, effectively re-imagining the work in terms of the piano, for example in exploiting the added sonority of the bass (Beethoven’s Broadwood piano extended an octave below the C string of the cello).The result is a tour de force of pianistic virtuosity, the equivalent for the nineteenth century of Stravinsky’s piano duet version of The Rite of Spring – centrepiece of Hill and Frith’s most recent Delphian album – and like the Stravinsky nothing less than the recreation of a masterpiece in another medium.

This new recording presents the transcription for piano duet that Felix Mendelssohn made of his immensely popular music for Shakespeare's Ein Sommernachtstraum ( a Midsummer Night's Dream). Mendelssohn, one of the greatest piano virtuosos of his time, perfectly managed to maintain the fairytale atmosphere of the orchestral score in this beautifully written piano arrangement: the famous Scherzo shines with pianistic glitter and the Wedding March receives the appropriate festiveness and pomp.Brilliantly played by the Italian DuoKeira, prize winners of the 2010 IBLA Grand Prize World Music Competition and one of the recipients of the Global Music Awards.

The Metis Piano Duo was born around 2014, from the meeting between the two pianists Loretta Proietti and Alessandra Felice, both coming from a wide experience in chamber music. Their common passion for chamber repertoire and in particular for piano duo, gave birth to a natural exchange and fusion of opinions, creating a particular artistic and musical understanding. The idea of Metis Piano Duo name, must be sought first of all in the common interest in ancient Greek literature. In particular Metis has implicit meaning of “cunning of intelligence”, because Metis, a very mighty goddess in Greek mythology, personified wisdom, reason and intelligence, able to identify the best way for the successful solution to the traps of life.
