SoulMusic Records' top-tier stewardship of Dionne Warwick's catalog continues with Sure Thing: The Warner Bros. Recordings 1972-1977, a six-disc package that neatly fits beside the label's likewise comprehensive Déjà Vu: The Arista Recordings 1979-1994. Warwick was positioned for success with Warner. With seven masterly Top Ten pop hits spanning seven years to her credit, the singer had left Scepter Records to sign what Variety reported in 1971 as the most lucrative recording contract signed by a female artist. Warner rolled out the proverbial red carpet. Despite the involvement of Burt Bacharach and Hal David, the songwriting/production team behind all of those Scepter smashes, 1972's Dionne got the era off to a slow start. A bad omen of sorts was that its one charting single was neither produced nor written by Warwick's then-seemingly inseparable partners (who soon split).

With a total of 40 Pop chart hits, Dionne Warwick's recordings for the Scepter label rank as arguably the most successful run of any artist - and certainly of any female artist - for an independent label during the 1960s. But all that success had a downside for her considerable legacy: Scepter became a hot property for acquisition, and as a result the label's holdings were bought and sold several times before Dionne herself arranged to buy her own masters back. By that time, though, the Scepter tapes had been scattered in disarray, thus leaving a lot of material in limbo and causing compilers to throw up their hands. Produced by the hit production team of Steve Barri and Michael Omartian (Rhythm Heritage's #1 pop hit "Theme from S.W.A.T,"), Dionne Warwick's 1977 Warner Bros. LP "Love at First Sight" came closest in pop ethics to her earlier sides on Scepter. Serving as a reminder of those days is the wispy ballad "Do I Have to Cry" and the perky "Early Morning Strangers," which were co-written by Hal David, who co-wrote Warwick's '60s and early-'70s hit classics with Burt Bacharach. The upbeat first single, "Do You Believe in Love at First Sight," was one of the catchier tracks off the singer's '70s records. However, the cornerstone of the LP was the atmospheric "Don't Ever Take Your Love Away," co-written by Issac Hayes. The Barry Mann/Cynthia Weil charmer "Long Way to Go" is closest in theme to Warwick's favorite song, "Windows of the World."
