Luis Buñuel’s final film explodes with eroticism, bringing full circle the director’s lifelong preoccupation with the darker side of desire. Buñuel regular Fernando Rey plays Mathieu, an urbane widower, tortured by his lust for the elusive Conchita. With subversive flare, Buñuel uses two different actresses in the lead—Carole Bouquet, a sophisticated French beauty, and Angela Molina, a Spanish coquette. Drawn from Pierre Louÿs’s 1898 novel, La Femme et le Pantin, That Obscure Object of Desire is a dizzying game of sexual politics punctuated by a terror that harkens back to Buñuel’s brilliant surrealistic beginnings.

American couple Jake and Tina are living in an expensive London hotel above their means, incurring a sizeable debt. When they are asked to pay a lavish dinner bill and Jake's card is declined, he suggests they sell Tina's tiny, expensive Henry Moore sculpture to cover the debt. After they hatch a scheme to claim the sculpture was stolen in order to collect insurance on it, the sculpture mysteriously goes missing.

Jake and his girlfriend Tina reside at a ritzy London hotel… which they can't afford. They have in their possession a small statue sculpted by Henry Moore, a gift from Tina's estranged husband. The financially troubled Jake is entertaining thoughts of selling the artwork – worth $50,000 – to solve some of his money problems. But a wrench is thrown in the works when a maid enamored with the figure steals it, although she is unaware of its high value. This puts a wedge in Jake and Tina's relationship, as each believes the other has stolen the statue..
