Dirty Projectors Windows Open

Dirty Projectors is an American Experimental/Indie Rock band, fronted by David Longstreth. The band has gone through numerous lineup changes, but has remained centered around Longstreth. "Dirty Projectors" is the band's self-titled seventh studio album.

This summer, Dirty Projectors will release Flight Tower, the next in a sequence of five EPs to come in 2020. Each EP will feature a different band member on lead vocals — Maia, Felicia, Kristin & Dave — with everyone trading verses on the fifth and final installment.

Mount Wittenberg Orca is named so because it is about whales, it was inspired by events on Mt. Wittenberg in California, and because it elaborates on David Longstreth's obsession with vocal harmony introduced on Dirty Projectors' 2009 album Bitte Orca. This seven-song, twenty-one minute collection is the first original music the band has recorded since Bitte Orca, and it feels more like a small album than an EP. It is also their most staggering collaboration yet — with the Icelandic artist Björk.

Today, Dirty Projectors release Ring Road, their final EP of 2020, completing the cycle of five and culminating their “most ambitious and earnest endeavor thus far” (Aquarium Drunkard). Each installment has been its own stylistic and emotional ecosystem, featuring band members Maia Friedman, Felicia Douglass, Dave Longstreth, and Kristin Slipp taking turns in the lead vocal spotlight. Now, that mosaic ideal of the full-band Dirty Projectors is recapitulated as their voices come together all at once on the fifth and finalRing Road EP.

Earth Crisis is the fourth in a series of five EPs Dirty Projectors are releasing this year, each one with a different band member handling lead vocals. (The fifth and final installment will see them taking turns.) Whereas the previous three releases zeroed in on folk, soul, and bossa nova respectively, this one leans into Longstreth’s experimental composer side, presenting a chopped-up version of chamber-pop. Keyboardist Kristin Slipp is the lead vocalist here, singing lyrics she wrote with Longstreth.

This September, Dirty Projectors will release Super João, the third in a sequence of five EPs to come in 2020. Each EP will feature a different band member on lead vocals — Maia, Felicia, Kristin & Dave — with everyone trading verses on the fifth and final installment.

Never one for easy categorisation, the on-going adventures of David Longstreth’s Dirty Projectors project are especially genre-agnostic on the 5 EPs released throughout 2020. The neatly-titled 5EPs collates these songs into a mammoth compilation. Each set of songs sees a different band-member taking over lead vocal duties, and indeed the flavours of these tracks stretch the breadth and width of the musical spectrum. The likes of ‘Self Design’ and ‘Empty Vessel’ deal in funk and house-inspired rhythms, while ‘Moon, If Ever’ and ‘I Get Carried Away’ are staunchly minimal in instrumentation, but undeniably 1960s pop in melodic sophistication.

Produced by Dave Longstreth , in his Ivo Shandor studio in Los Angeles, Lamp Lit Prose welcomes the collaborations of SYD , EMPRESS OF , AMBER MARK , HAIM , ROSTAM , ROBIN PECKNOLD and DEAR NORA but also of his long-time companions Nat Baldwin and Mike Johnson.

Dirty Projectors, the beloved, decade-plus-long recording pursuit of producer, multi-instrumentalist, and vocalist David Longstreth, presents the eighth full-length album in the band’s wildly varied and fascinating discography. As with previous Dirty Projectors albums, the forthcoming release sees Longstreth lead a group of hugely talented contributors, including Solange Knowles, Tyondai Braxton, Mauro Refosco (Atoms For Peace, Red Hot Chili Peppers), and Dawn Richard (D∆WN and Danity Kane), in realizing his creative vision.
