Four CD set. While the recordings on Eddie Piller's latest release may be familiar to diehard fans of great '60s music, the story behind it will be new to many, but is well worth telling and hearing all the same. A lot of youngsters fell in love with the Mod lifestyle during the revival at the end of the '70s, but the more inquisitive ones like Eddie wanted to know more about the original fashions, the original influential figures, and most of all the original music. Step forward one Randy Cozens, eager to give the benefit of his advice. In those pre-internet days, his platform of choice was the letter pages of the weekly music press. His enthusiasm, his passion, and the sheer volume of missives he posted persuaded Sounds to commission Randy's guide to the music that was played in the all-nighter clubs in London's West End in those early '60s halcyon days.

Back in the mid-‘60s, The Artwoods were one of the most vital, impressive R&B bands on the circuit, fronted by Art Wood (elder brother of future Faces/Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie) and also boasting future Deep Purple organist Jon Lord, renowned drummer Keef Hartley, guitarist Derek Griffiths and bassist Malcolm Pool. Between 1964 and 1967, the band recorded seven singles, the ultra-rare EP ‘Jazz In Jeans’ and a nearly as scarce LP, ‘Art Gallery’, mostly for Decca…

This continues the strand of R&B and country collections associated with Acrobat’s highly popular “America’s Greatest Hits” series, this one focusing on the top R&B records in the US Billboard charts during 1959. This great value 115-track 4-CD anthology includes, with the exception of certain records which are unavailable for inclusion due to copyright restrictions, just about every record which peaked in the Top 14 positions of Billboard’s “Hot R&B Sides” chart during the year. The pop and R&B market was continuing to evolve as rock ‘n’ roll matured, and new strands arrived, with pop-flavoured R&B vocal groups making a significant impact, along with fine R&B vocalists who readily crossed into the pop charts, while the boundaries between pop and R&B continued to become less clear, as some pure pop records got traction on R&B radio stations.
