Kamakiriad is the second solo album by Steely Dan artist Donald Fagen, released in 1993. It was his first collaboration with Steely Dan partner Walter Becker since 1986, on Rosie Vela's album Zazu. Becker played guitar and bass and produced the album. The album is a futuristic, optimistic eight-song cycle about the journey of the narrator in his high-tech car, the Kamakiri (Japanese for praying mantis). It was nominated for a Grammy Award for Album of the Year 1994.

Donald Fagen was one of the two masterminds behind Steely Dan, the seminal jazz-pop band of the '70s. Fagen's solo work has been a continuation of the band's work of the early '80s - carefully constructed and arranged, intricately detailed pop songs that are more substantial than their stylish surface may indicate. His 1982 solo debut, "The Nightfly", was the best album he had made in years; it covered the same ground as the last two Steely Dan albums, yet surpassed it in terms of ambition and achievement. Originally produced by Steely Dan's co-founding member, Walter Becker, Donald Fagen's "Kamakiriad" is a brilliantly executed futuristic retro concept album which spins a unique Sci-Fi outlook on the world. The eight-song cycle re-creates a retro-futuristic world in which Fagen's '50s nostalgia meets high-tech millennialism. If you loved the studio-intensive blues-rock, tantalizing, crisp white funk grooves that made Steely Dan, and Fagen's first solo album so compelling, "Kamakiriad" will keep your pulse racing.

Sometimes the boxed sets of beloved artists containing albums which you haven’t heard in some time are disappointing. They just don’t move you like they did. You’re left not knowing if you were wrong before, or if you have changed, and nothing sounds as powerful as it did long ago.
The opposite is true with this new Donald Fagen collection. Many of the tracks from his solo albums, soundtracks and more resound like absolute classics. Not only do they pass that brutal test of time test, they have surpassed it. These songs and tracks sound even more powerful all these years since the season of their creation.

There are no surprises in sound and style on Morph the Cat, Donald Fagen's long-awaited third solo album, nor should any be expected – ever since Steely Dan's 1980 masterwork, Gaucho, his work, either on his own or with longtime collaborator Walter Becker, has been of a piece. Each record has been sleek, sophisticated, and immaculately produced, meticulously recorded and arranged, heavy on groove and mood, which tends to mask the sly wit of the songs. When it works well – as it did on Fagen's peerless 1982 solo debut, The Nightfly, or on Steely Dan's 2001 comeback, Two Against Nature – the results go down smoothly upon first listen and reveal their complexity with each spin; when it doesn't quite succeed – both 1993's Kamakiriad and the Dan's 2003 effort Everything Must Go didn't quite gel – the albums sound good but samey on the surface and don't quite resonate.

Most rock & roll bands are a tightly wound unit that developed their music through years of playing in garages and clubs around their hometown. Steely Dan never subscribed to that aesthetic. As the vehicle for the songwriting of Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, Steely Dan defied all rock & roll conventions…

CLASSIC 1993 STEELY DAN BROADCAST, COMPLETELY REMASTERED Following the tumultuous albeit fruitful recording of their 1980 album Gaucho, and their subsequent breakup soon thereafter, the next decade was somewhat quiet for Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, the gifted musical duo behind Steely Dan. Despite a number of producer credits to their respective names, the only releases that appeared with either as featured artist were two Donald Fagen solo records. The first, The Nightfly, came out to rapturous critical and commercial success, going Platinum on both sides of the Atlantic. Meanwhile, Becker was listed as an as an official member of China Crisis on their 1985 album Flaunt the Imperfection.
