Consulting theologians and Bible scholars during the 1990s, photographer, writer, graphic artist, and everyday mystic Lee Cantelon (aka Pennyhead) assembled a small book presenting the words of Jesus Christ (just Jesus' words, not the stuff surrounding them) in a fitting translation called The Words. He did it for the purpose of presenting those words to people who were not "religious" – people who were put off by organized religion or even offended by it…

Consider that Frankie "Sugar Chile" Robinson was the premier, and almost the only boogie-woogie pianist to come out of Detroit. Consider that he retired from the music business before he graduated high school. And consider that he was between eight and fourteen years old when he made these recordings (also available on the Classics label,) which makes this release of vintage blues from the child prodigy an important document. Similar in looks to latter period child star Gary Coleman, and similar stylistically to the barrelhouse pianists who preceded him, he was a phenomenon, but hardly a novelty act. Robinson might be best known in contemporary times for the title track from this CD, which was the music for the popular Dockers slacks T.V. commercial…

Wattstax: The Living Word is a 3-CD document of the all-day festival of Stax acts in Los Angeles in 1972 contains decent performances by the Staple Singers, Eddie Floyd, the Bar-Kays, Carla Thomas, Rufus Thomas, Albert King, the Soul Children and Isaac Hayes. It's not remarkably different from what you'll find on those artists' records, however, and Isaac Hayes does none of his more popular singles, his contribution being limited to a 17-minute cover of Bill Withers' "Ain't No Sunshine." Check out the Bar-Kays' outrageous eight-minute soul-rock workout on "Son of Shaft," though, which goes into some Santana-like grooves in the middle; Rufus Thomas launches into three dance novelties in a row ("The Breakdown," "Do the Funky Chicken," and "Do the Funky Penguin"). Note: a couple of these cuts (the Staple Singers' "Oh La De Da" and "Lay Your Loving on Me"), although programmed as if they were recorded live at the event, are actually versions that were re-recorded in the studio.

Opal Fire (2002). Son of a UN diplomat and classically trained, exciting young pianist Akram grew up digesting musical influences from around the world. These exotic flavors are brilliantly woven together in melodies that take flight and soar with expansive orchestrations and passionate rhythms and in more soothing moments, evoke an emotional response in a beautifully serene way.
Free As A Bird (2004). Free As a Bird is the much-anticipated follow-up to Omar's 2002 release, Opal Fire. Exotic, sensual, and brimming with life, it was worth the wait! Richly arranged and orchestrated by David Dial and Gregg Karukas, real instruments replace some of the keyboards from the earlier release, and the interaction of great musicians…

This is the Moody Blues installment in Universal Music's Collected series. The 54 selections span the band's nearly 40-year career – from early British Invasion-era songs through to the 2003 seasonal offering December. The original lineup hailed from Birmingham, England, and featured Ray Thomas (harmonica/vocals), Mike Pinder (keyboards/vocals), Denny Laine (vocals/guitar), Graeme Edge (drums), and Clint Warwick (bass/vocals). They had a massive worldwide smash with a remake of Bessie Banks' "Go Now" in early 1965. However, they suffered from the inability to provide a suitable follow-up, despite the undeniable groove heard on the blue-eyed soulful "From the Bottom of My Heart (I Love You)."
