Originally released in December 1998, Sad is the fourth and final Nels Cline Trio album, and perhaps the most diverse. It begins with a three-minute-long guitar drone, followed by a drum solo, then a quiet improv, and a blistering coda. And that's just the first track. "Fluff w/ Fork" and "Little Shaver" are the noisiest the Trio have ever been, while "Texas Telephone Pal" and "Thought Cloud" are perhaps the most abstract. Sad also features two of Nels' best and most fully realized compositions yet, "Arrows" and "Crest in Black".
Pere Ubu unveil their new album, THE LONG GOODBYE, nearly two years after their previous record for Cherry Red, 20 Years In A Montana Missile Silo.
Art As Catharsis is proud to announce the release of COAST’s second album, SKIM – a polyrhythmic record of expansive jazz, pushing the band into new, adventurous territory. Taking inspiration from mixtapes pieced together by Minimal Miggy, Godtet, Mecca 83 and more, Coast note that Skim attempts to emulate a love for grazing music interaction – a love that becomes more and more evident as the record progresses. Beyond that, drummer and composer for COAST Paul Derricott has spent the past 12 months sharing stages with Charenee Wade, Vivian Sessoms and Aloe Blacc – their influence being critical to the writing process.
One of the most peculiar landings and live recordings of the Sun Ra Arkestra released by Lanquidity Records. Taking place on the 7th of December in 1986 as part of the 13th installment of the International Jazz Piano Festival, Sun Ra and his Arkestra performed in the Polish city of Kalisz. Recently rediscovered, the complete tape of the concert lay for almost three decades in a Kalisz basement collecting dust. It has been remastered by Marcin Cichy (Ninja Tune), giving all the chance to re-live each musical moment of this historic gig.
Frank Zappa’s two complete Halloween shows in Chicago, recorded on 31 October 1973, are out now as Halloween 73, via Zappa Records/UMe.
In the early 1990s, the group was formed – initially under the name “Die Knödel” – from the environment of the Innsbruck music academy and a young folk music scene. Christof Dienz was already interested in the music of his Tyrolean homeland, and invited his friends, all with a family background in folk music, to record a couple of pieces he had composed. At a concert in Utopia in Innsbruck, music manager Christoph Moser noticed the group and took on their management. Performances in Europe, North America, Japan and Russia followed, as well as film music and five CDs, until in autumn 2000, after 8 years, they ran out of steam. Everyone went their own way and built their own career.
