Duke Ellington was so brilliant as a bandleader, arranger and composer that sometimes his piano playing was taken for granted. He gave few solo concerts in his career, which makes this particular Music Masters disc something special. At a 1964 appearance before the New York chapter of the Duke Ellington Society, the pianist played several trio numbers ("Take the 'A' Train," "Satin Doll," "Caravan," a drum showcase and a "Blues Medley") with his bassist Peck Morrison and drummer Sam Woodyard. There is also a joyous feature for Willie "The Lion" Smith (Duke's biggest influence) on "Carolina Shout," a remake of the Ellington-Billy Strayhorn piano duet "Tonk," and (best of all) four unaccompanied Ellington solos which are generally thoughtful and moody. This set is a must for Duke Ellington collectors.

At some point in their lifetime, everyone should treat themselves to a listen of Duke Ellington's "Satin Doll." If there is ever to be a true understanding of great jazz, exposure to one of the genre's original masters is a must, and "Satin Doll" provides an ideal glimpse at the popular big band-style of music that defined the early to mid-1900s. This timeless classic can be found on the 2001 release Love Songs, an ongoing series of CD collections of the same name on Columbia Legacy Records. Fans of even the most contemporary, electrified styles are sure to appreciate the smooth horn and wind arrangements, backed by cool rhythm sections that recall the days of zoot suits, swinging pocket watches, and slicked-back hair. Vocalists fortunate enough to collaborate with the Duke Ellington Orchestra were truly given a rare opportunity to perform with a legend…

"Blues In Orbit" captures the essence of a late-night recording date that was as much a loose jam as a formal studio date, balancing the spontaneity of the former and the technical polish of the latter. If you're just getting into jazz, this album is highly recommended as a great way to initiate your collection

One of two albums released from the same 1959 sessions (the other being "Side By Side"), Duke Ellington and alto saxophonist Johnny Hodges come together to play the blues, as the album's subtitle announces. Consisting entirely of covers, the recording features three tunes by classic American blues composer W.C. Handy, including a rendition of "Beale Street Blues".
