Besides hardcore Led Zeppelin fans, it's a little known fact that Jimmy Page produced and played on a 1970 album by theatrical rocker Screaming Lord Sutch, Lord Sutch and Heavy Friends. In addition to Page's appearance (he also co-penned a few tracks), the other 'friends' included John Bonham, Jeff Beck, Nicky Hopkins, and Noel Redding. Since the album is quite difficult to find nowadays, select tracks have popped up over the years on compilations, such as the 2000 set Rock and Roll Highway.

If you're a big fan of early 80's punk/hardcore then this book/cd compilation is definitely for you. It explores the underground music that sprang up, then festered, in Victoria in those days. The booklet is full of old flyers and pictures and manages to shed some light on all the bands featured on the 2 cd set. The 79 tracks on here range from a few poppy New Wave bands to crude English-style punk to low-fi jambox recordings of adolescent hardcore bands like The Beaten Retards, Jerk Ward, and The Commodes. You can find some great early stuff by the Dayglo Abortions on here too. Some of the best tracks, if only for the title are: Millions of Dead BMXers, Fuckin' Jerk, Whiter Than Hitler, My Son is a Kuwahara, Too Much Drugs, etc… I love this stuff! If you're into the obscure stuff like I am…you can't go wrong with this! –Diehard Skatezine #6

An Opera for Four Fusion Works is a unique project by Vidna Obmana and Hypnos - a four-CD album, released one CD at a time. In each of the four chapters or "Acts," Belgian ambient/experimental artist Vidna Obmana (Dirk Serries) will rework or "recycle" the sound sources of a different musician or group. The four acts will be linked in a thematic sense, but will use completely different and distinct sound sources as raw material for Vidna Obmana's manipulation. Act I used guitar pieces from Dreams in Exile, Act II used Bill Fox's saxophone recordings, Act III worked from the foundation of Kenneth Kirschner's piano works, and this last installment utilizes the voice of Steven Wilson (No-Man, Porcupine Tree, and the artist behind Bass Communion).

Motörhead's overwhelmingly loud and fast style of heavy metal was one of the most groundbreaking sounds the genre had to offer in the late '70s. Though the group's leader, Lemmy Kilmister, had his roots in the hard-rocking space rock band Hawkwind, Motörhead didn't bother with his old group's progressive tendencies, choosing to amplify the heavy biker-rock elements of Hawkwind with the speed of punk rock.

John Lee Hooker never abandoned his raw, gut bucket Mississippi-Delta-comes-to-the-city approach to the blues throughout his fifty-year career, and if he got a tad bit slicker towards the end of that career, it was only a tad and only by degree. There are innumerable Hooker collections on the market, and this two-disc set wouldn't be anything particularly special except that it actually charts through his entire history, beginning with the ageless "Boogie Chillen," which was recorded in 1948 and topped the R&B charts for Modern Records in 1949, through "Tupelo," which was recorded in 1993 and released on the Pointblank LP Chill Out in 1995.

Don’t take the title of James Taylor’s One Man Band literally—this 2007 concert recording may be stripped-down but it’s not just James and a guitar, he’s supported by keyboardist Larry Goldings, whom Taylor dubs his “one-man band” in the liner notes, as that’s all the backing band he has here. Fair enough. But this isn’t just a question of clever semantics: as it turns out, Goldings has quite a presence on this intimate album, recorded at a three-night stint at the Colonial Theatre in Pittsfield, MA, during July 2007. During this 19-song set, Taylor gives Goldings plenty of space to grace the songs with solos that show up his jazz chops.

Turn It On Again: The Hits is a greatest hits collection by British progressive rock/pop-rock band Genesis. The album was first released as a single album on 26 October 1999 by Virgin Records in England and by Atlantic Records in the United States. In 2007, an expanded two-disc edition, subtitled The Tour Edition, was released to promote the Turn It on Again reunion tour. All of the tracks, except for "The Carpet Crawlers 1999," were remixed by Nick Davis. In addition, the album features more songs from every album in the band's catalogue (minus the live albums and From Genesis to Revelation).

GOLD is the best anthology for the average Oak Ridge Boys fan looking for something more than just the basic hits, but not ready to go exploring too deep into the band's voluminous back catalogue. At 35 tracks on 2 discs, it contains all the band's charting singles (including, of course, "Elvira") and a smattering of enjoyable rarities. The set covers only their hit-making years, from the early 1970s through the late '80s, but as an overview of that crucial period, GOLD is indispensable.

Gold: Old School Jams Review by Andy Kellman
The terrain sampled here has been trod upon hundreds of times. However, since this double-disc set is part of Hip-O/Universal's Gold series, it shouldn't be disregarded on first sight. While anyone with a basic collection of funk, post-disco, or any other forms of club-oriented R&B spanning the '70s through the first half of the '80s will likely have a good percentage of the tracks on Old School Jams, a few gaps are bound to be plugged, and the sound quality is such that you might be able to replace some of those lower-budget discs you picked up during the late '80s and early '90s. Another winning factor is that the longer 12" mixes are often used instead of single edits. Oft-compiled hits like the Commodores' "Brick House," Rick James' "Super Freak," and Rose Royce's "Car Wash" are balanced with tracks that never seem to get their due, like Teena Marie's "I'm Just a Sucker for Your Love" (at least not compared to "Behind the Groove" or "Square Biz"), Mary Jane Girls' "All Night Long," and Bobby Nunn's "She's Just a Groupie."
