On the whole, and even if you’re overly familiar with the material, the DVD-Audio surround mix of ‘Hotel California’ is an engrossing experience; the multi-channel presentation is sensible and the fidelity excellent. In comparison, the two-channel mix is a little disappointing, but only because it doesn’t have the vibrancy and increased presence of the former, which in its own right is enough to place ‘Hotel California’ on my ‘highly recommended’ list.

Balance is the key element of the Eagles' self-titled debut album, a collection that contains elements of rock & roll, folk, and country, overlaid by vocal harmonies alternately suggestive of doo wop, the Beach Boys, and the Everly Brothers. If the group kicks up its heels on rockers like "Chug All Night," "Nightingale," and "Tryin'," it is equally convincing on ballads like "Most of Us Are Sad" and "Train Leaves Here This Morning." The album is also balanced among its members, who trade off on lead vocal chores and divide the songwriting such that Glenn Frey, Bernie Leadon, and Randy Meisner all get three writing or co-writing credits…

A new 2-CD/1-Blu-ray Audio deluxe edition that includes the original studio album, ten previously unreleased live recordings, as well as hi-res and 5.1 mixes. The collection marks the debut of ten live tracks that were recorded during the band s three-night stand at the Los Angeles Forum in October 1976. The concert recordings which were recorded about a month before the album came out features one of the first ever live performances of Hotel California and New Kid In Town along with other Eagles classics including Already Gone, Take It To The Limit, and Witchy Woman. The Blu-ray Audio disc that accompanies HOTEL CALIFORNIA: DELUXE EDITION features the 5.1 Surround Sound mix originally released on DVD-A in 2001 along with a hi-resolution, 192 KHz/24-Bit stereo mix.
