Eating Schoolgirls: Osaka Telephone Club (1997)

Buena Vista Social Club is the debut album by the eponymous ensemble of Cuban musicians directed by Juan de Marcos González and American guitarist Ry Cooder. It was recorded at Havana's EGREM studios in March 1996 and released on September 16, 1997, on World Circuit. Despite its success, it remains the only standard studio album exclusively credited to the Buena Vista Social Club. Buena Vista Social Club earned considerable critical praise and has received numerous accolades from music writers and publications. In 2003, the album was ranked number 260 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time, one of only two albums on the list to be produced in a non-English speaking country. The album was also included in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. The album was awarded the 1998 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Tropical Latin Album and Tropical/Salsa Album of the Year by a Group at the 1998 Billboard Latin Music Awards.

One of Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Albums of all Time", the platinum-selling album topped multiple charts, including Billboard's Top World and Latin Charts, Buena Vista Social Club was one of the biggest surprise hits of the early 2000's, triggering an international revival in Cuban music. Spearheaded by Grammy-winning guitarist Ry Cooder and producer Nick Gold, the project brought together some of Cuba's greatest musical luminaries, including legendary bassist Orlando "Cachaito" López, guitarist Eliades Ochoa, musical director Juan de Marcos González, and acclaimed pianist Rubén González.

Jiří Stivín has been interpreting pre-Classical music on the recorder since 1975. After graduating from the cinematography department of the Prague Film Academy (FAMU), he devoted himself exclusively to music. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music as well as at the Prague Academy of Music, where he studied composition. His flute teachers were Milan Muncingler (Ars Revidiva) and Jiří Válek (Czech Philharmonic). Stivin performs music from the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and the Baroque periods. He has recorded flute concertos (Telemann and Vivaldi on 4 CDs) and has mastered all kinds of flutes and recorders.
