Chopin's 24 Préludes, unlike those of Bach, do not precede either fugue or sung chorale. The term underlines the modesty of these short, simply shaped pieces. But these pieces prelude each other, since they form a carefully ordered whole, according to the cycle of fifths, to sweep through the twenty-four major and minor keys. After his brilliant recording of the Ballades and Scherzos, Abdel Rahman El Bacha continues his virtuoso interpretation of Chopin's work with these Préludes.

You might not watch Alfonso Cuarón's deeply personal story inspired by his family's housekeeper in 1970s Mexico City and think of El-P or Billie Eilish. But this genre-hopping compilation is meant to invoke the spirit, if not the letter, of the largely scoreless Oscar-nominated film. Only a handful of the songs are in Spanish or feel like they could have come from the era itself—Jessie Reyez's ballad “Con el Viento” among them—while Ibeyi's “Cleo Who Takes Care of You” is the exception that overtly references the plot. What binds the songs together, even from seemingly incongruent artists, is a hazy, dreamlike tension—from Beck's majestic cover of the 1982 Colourbox song “Tarantula” to Patti Smith's reprise of her own “Wing” from 1996. But the biggest revelation may be Cuarón's teenage daughter Bu, whose “PSYCHO” is pure contemporary pop, positioned perfectly alongside Billie Eilish's skittish “When I Was Older.”

The title of this collection of David Dzubays recent solo, chamber, and ensemble music comes from Toni Morrison: You know, they straightened out the Mississippi River in places, to make room for houses and livable acreage. Occasionally the river floods these places. Floods is the word they use, but in fact it is not flooding; it is remembering All water has a perfect memory and is forever trying to get back to where it was. Writers are like that: remembering where we were It is emotional memorywhat the nerves and the skin remember as well as how it appeared.

On this second volume of The Rough Guide To Latin Rare Groove, we’ve gone deeper to unearth even more treats for collectors of obscure, funky, tropical dance music. While taking the ‘rare groove’ genre too seriously can get you accused of snobbery or being a nerd, there is something to be said for the thrill of discovery and sharing something new, especially if it’s old and made of vinyl (even better if it was never originally released to begin with). So proceed without shame, dear digger. Just because ‘rare groove’ owes its name to the 1980s London club scene, where it was used to describe obscure soul, funk and jazz, doesn’t mean the movement is just some passing fad or even entirely new to Latin music fans – quite the contrary.
