Eline Lykke

2011 album from the Swedish singer/songwriter. Channeling the demise of The Shangri-La's 'Leader of the Pack', women under the influence, ladies and gentlemen of the canyon, a Kung-fu Marianne Faithful, and an armed Nancy Sinatra on peyote, Lykke Li has created an 11 song album that sounds like no other. The record is packed full of pounding, voodoo drums, girl group gang vocals, sparkling guitar lines, woozy keyboards, love unrequited, hope reignited and her own very powerful voice, sounding bigger and bolder than ever before. From the hazy 60's organ driving opener "Youth Knows No Pain" to the sparse toe-tapsolo- guitar-swing of "Unrequited Love" to rollicking single "Get Some" to the dense drums of the propulsive "Jerome," Wounded Rhymes is a testament to Lykke Li's brilliant musical voice, one unlike any other. Although Charles Koechlin led an — one could state — almost ‘conventional’ life as a composer, studying at the Paris Conservatoire with Massenet and Fauré and subsequently earning his money as a teacher and composer, his interests stretched long ways beyond just composing. He had a wide range of interests, which can also be assumed to have affected his compositional style. These interests, for instance, included French folksong, Bach chorales, the “Jungle Book”, photography, and most noticeably, astronomy, with the young Koechlin having had aspirations of becoming an astrologist.

Lykke Li returns with her fifth studio album EYEYE. The album is an eight track story about lust, attraction, attachment, and rejection; the landscape of love. The songs are inhabited by moving images that neither start nor end. Each film functions as a visual loop, concise as a haiku, yet continuing in perpetuity. The result is a somatic, repetitious experience. Compounding chapters between a dream and reality.

There has always been something captivating about Swedish singer/songwriter Lykke Li. From the minimalist mix of icy electronics and playful indie pop of her 2008 debut "Youth Novels" to the weightier, percussive anthems on "Wounded Rhymes", she has flexed her considerable creative muscle but never quite managed to dial in on a sound that would define her. She manages a tunefulness that aspires to great pop heights, yet retains the wintry austerity of her Nordic roots.
