Soundtrack

From the very first booming drums and big acoustic guitars, the Dressmaker's score instantly tells the audience, "Don't be fooled by the title - this is not a chic flick!" Director Jocelyn Moorhouse's brief was to hypnotise and intrigue the audience with a spell of "deliciously wicked" music, and that's exactly what David Hirschfelder did, from the first frame to the last. The sound of the score, whilst occasionally tipping it's hat to classic western genre films of the 50s and 60s, nevertheless has its own voice, with a bedrock of string orchestra, overlaid with earthy acoustic guitars, tenor mandolins, country fiddles, piano, various percussion instruments and assorted oddball delights - including washboard, bucket bass, and other misfit instruments such as 3-string guitars made from cookie tins strummed with coins.

At the end of 1994, Marc's fifth and final solo album appeared. It was called "Talk To Strangers". Marc had tried to sell the album to major record companies for about two years, but no-one was interested. Finally it was picked up by the independent Roadshow label for release. The first single from it was "Get So Rough"/"Song Of New Devotion" and this was followed by "One Of The Good Guys"/"Desires Of The Heart". The album also included a song called "Spellbound", which Marc found on a piece of tape with him and Paul Hewson messing around in the early eighties. Marc completed Paul's song by adding a middle eight and some words.

Who would have imagined that the son of some Italian immigrants was going to personify the elegance of Anglo-Saxon music ? Still, Mario MILLO has become the creator of a certain kind of sunny steady rock, usually typical of Californian beaches. We have to say that this guitarist-singer is nevertheless an Australian, the same nationality as LITTLE RIVER BAND (A band that sometimes performs a quite similar music)! …

This album is the second studio album with John Farnham as lead vocalist and the first to be recorded by the band in the United States. The album peaked at #75 on The Billboard 200. The first single from the album was "Playing to Win", which was released in December 1984 and reached #59 on the Australian Singles Chart, #15 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart and #60 on The Billboard Hot 100. The second single, "Blind Eyes", failed to enter the chart. The album was re-released on CD in March 1997 on One Way Records with bonus tracks.

Former Little River Band singer John Farnham managed to reinvent himself as an '80s pop star on Whispering Jack. Immensely popular in Australia, the album as well as the first single "You're the Voice" sat at the top of the charts for many weeks. Whispering Jack was an album of slick, commercial synth pop, and from that point of view it was quite good. "You're the Voice," which comes complete with bagpipe solo, is the obvious highlight of this set. It became an instant classic, and is the song this album is most remembered for, even though "Pressure Down" and "A Touch of Paradise" also became hit singles. On a couple of tracks, Farnham moves into more of a straight rock territory ("Love to Shine," "Let Me Out"). Farnham's solo career really took off following this album.
