As a singer, Carol King won over millions of fans with her honest portrayals of love and life. As a songwriter, she penned dozens of hits for others, many which became American pop standards. Now for the first time, these two aspects of a long and celebrated career are combined , telling the complete story of an extraordinarily gifted and successful artists, who is still actively performing to this day, more than four decades later. Disc one features the best of Carole King including collaborations with Celine Dion and Babyface. Disc two features songs penned by King but performed and made hits by other artists.

Mahalia Jackson rewrote the rules for singing gospel in the late '40s by bringing blues phrasing and other secular elements into sacred song, and with her powerful alto, she sang with an immediacy and conviction that are still startling when they break out of the speakers some 30 years after her death. This two-disc set collects tracks from Jackson's long stay at Columbia Records, as well as a few tracks from her previous label, Apollo Records, where she recorded from 1947 until signing with Columbia in 1954.

Epic's The Essential Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble gathers two discs' worth of the late blues guitarist's work, including many live performances and a few tracks with the Vaughan Brothers. The collection presents Vaughan's material in roughly chronological order, from the 1980 live recording "Shake for Me" to 1989's "Life by the Drop." It also touches on most of Vaughan's definitive songs and performances, including "Tightrope," "Wall of Denial," "Couldn't Stand the Weather," and "Cold Shot," and live versions of "The Sky Is Crying," "Superstition," and "Rude Mood/Hide Away." Though this album doesn't offer anything that hasn't already been released in some form or another, it does go into slightly more depth than several of the other Stevie Ray Vaughan retrospectives by presenting both his greatest studio hits and some of his best live work.

UMC’s budget imprint Spectrum delivers another Essential collection, this time offering three CDs of great music from Nik Kershaw who was massive in the UK in 1984 and 1985.
