Old Soul is a personal meditation wrapped up in a contemporary jazz album, offering complex yet accessible music with diverse influences that stem from Robi Botos' life story. Pianist and multi-instrumentalist Robi Botos takes his core quartet of Seamus Blake on sax, Mike Downes on bass, and Larnell Lewis on drums through a collection of largely original tracks that revolve around themes of lost places and friends, new hope and optimism for the future.

There is but one human race, and yet from the one comes immediate division as we place definitions on one another. Growing up in Budapest, this division was always clear for Robi Botos as he reflected on his Romani heritage and the suffering that the Roma have endured. Often emigration can be a desire for separation, but it seems that more often it is born of a desire for inclusion. This is true in Robi’s case as he moved his family to Canada at 20 to continue his life in music. Fully immersed in the Jazz scene, Botos placed first in the Montreux Jazz Festival’s solo piano competition, where the great Oscar Peterson took note. Soon the two formed a friendship that endured, as Peterson taught Robi to find his own voice.

Classical / Symphony

The reappearance of this DG set means that once again both of Eugen Jochum’s Bruckner symphony cycles are available at the same price level. The EMI cycle was recorded in 1975-80 with the Dresden Staatskapelle, while DG’s was taped primarily in the 1960s with the Bavarian Radio Symphony and the Berlin Philharmonic. There’s little to choose between the two interpretively, as Jochum pretty much maintained his individualistic approach to Bruckner throughout his career. So, take away the uniquely burnished tones of the Dresden brass and for the most part you’ve got two identical cycles (type Q2340 in Search Reviews for a detailed appraisal of the EMI set, as released by Musical Heritage Society).
