This book covers a broad range of materials science that has been brought to bear on providing solutions to the challenges of developing self-healing and protective coatings for a range of metals. The book has a strong emphasis on characterisation techniques, particularly new techniques that are beginning to be used in the coatings area. This book describes the latest developments of lanthanum zirconate based thermal barrier coatings. The physical, thermal, and mechanical properties of lanthanum zirconate powder and coatings are critically evaluated. Processing and characterizations of lanthanum zirconate powder and coatings under various conditions are also examined. Theoretical studies on the powder and coating’s properties are presented as well. Finally, future research directions of lanthanum zirconate as the next generation thermal barrier applications are proposed.

Optical coatings, i.e. multilayer stacks composed from a certain number of thin individual layers, are an essential part of any optical system necessary to tailor the properties of the optical surfaces. Hereby, the performance of any optical coating is defined by a well-balanced interplay between the properties of the individual coating materials and the geometrical parameters (such as film thickness) which define their arrangement.
