Ewiger Rembrandt

Weihnachten 1944: Als sowjetische Soldaten in ein kleines Dorf in Ungarn einmarschieren, werden sämtliche junge Frauen deutscher Abstammung verschleppt. Diese müssen fortan unter menschenverachtenden Bedingungen in einem sowjetischen Arbeitslager Kohle abbauen. Unter ihnen befindet sich auch die junge Mutter Irén. Unterstützung erhält sie von Rajmund, der ihr zeigt, wie man in einem Lager überlebt. Während sie entschlossen ist, zu ihrer kleinen Tochter und Familie zurückzukehren, haben Geschichte und Schicksal einen anderen Plan: Irén und Rajmund verlieben sich ineinander.

J'accuse is an 'essay-istic' documentary in which Greenaway's fierce criticism of today's visual illiteracy is argued by means of a forensic search of Rembrandt's Nightwatch. Greenaway explains the background, the context, the conspiracy, the murder and the motives of all its 34 painted characters who have conspired to kill for their combined self-advantage. Greenaway leads us through Rembrandt's paintings into 17th century Amsterdam. He paints a world that is democratic in principle, but is almost entirely ruled by twelve families. The notion exists of these regents as charitable and compassionate beings. However, reality was different.

L'autoportrait est rendu possible par la diffusion du miroir de verre entre le XIIIe et le XVe siècle. Pour faire son autoportrait, le peintre doit en effet copier son reflet dans le miroir : l'image obtenue est retournée et le droitier devient gaucher. Le peintre doit donc tricher pour replacer ses instruments dans la bonne main. Masaccio, Botticelli, Dürer précèdent Rembrandt qui fait éclater le genre. Dès ses premiers tableaux, Rembrandt se met en scène. Par la suite, au moins une centaine de fois, il prendra son visage comme unique sujet de gravures, de dessins ou de peintures. Une pareille obstination, unique dans le domaine de l'histoire de l'art, a été très diversement interprétée. Certains des autoportraits de Rembrandt pourraient passer pour l'expression d'un homme extravagant. Mais les objets qui y figurent peuvent être souvent décryptés de tout autre façon. A travers toiles et panneaux, on peut certes suivre toute l'histoire du visage de Rembrandt, mais aussi lire la symbolique d'une Europe humaniste en pleine mutation.
