Father to Son

From Father To Son is a 2002 duet album between the legendary sarod musician Ali Akbar Khan and his son, Alam Khan. It was recorded live on 12 May, 2001 at John's Presbyterian Church in Berkeley, California when Ali Akbar Khan was 79. The performance is united by tabla player Swapan Chaudhuri and tanpura player James Pomerantz. The performance consists of a 58 minute raga. Ali Akbar Khan would pass away eight years later on 18 June, 2009 at the age of 87.

Russian filmmaker Alexsandr Sokurov directs this study of the intense bond between a father (Andrey Schetinin) and his son, Aleksei (Aleksey Neymsyshev). Having lived alone together for years in a rooftop flat overlooking the sea, the two have created their own private world filled with memory and ritual. Like his father before him, Aleksei attends military school and the two spend their free time wrestling and lifting weights together. But as Aleksei's recurrent nightmares and the demands of the outside world place mounting pressure on their intimate and rarefied existence, it seems that family life as they know it will eventually have to come to an end.
