During the last months of 2014 it was decided that we had to contact one of the artists we admire most, the fantastic Dutch fortepianist Bart van Oort, and offer him (nearly beg him, we first thought) to agree to do some projects for Cantus. Repertory? Carte blanche, the one he wanted. When? When he felt ready. His answer was almost immediate: “I don’t want to just make an isolated record, I prefer that we do a project that takes us several years. We can continue the series that I started years ago with the Brilliant label, dedicated to one of the most beautiful and deepest pianistic genres, the Nocturne”.

The Nocturne is one of the most popular and beloved forms of music. Yet, many of us today do not know the name of its creator: John Field. Born in Ireland, Field lived during the same period as Beethoven, and his musical legacy has influenced not only Chopin but also generations of composers up to the present day. “By recording this album, I hope to share the story of this historically important composer and to encourage listeners to discover the origins of the Nocturne.” Alice Sara Ott

A nocturne is a musical composition that is inspired by, or evocative of, the night. The term nocturne (from French nocturne 'of the night', also named Notturno) was first applied to musical pieces in the 18th century, when it indicated an ensemble piece in several movements, normally played for an evening occasion.

Any new recording of the complete Nocturnes by Frédéric Chopin rouses the interest: in the field of countless existing recordings, does the pianist have something new to say? Inspired by but not imitating the great masters of the Golden Piano Age, Vincenzo Maltempo presents the Nocturnes as dramatic tone poems with a strong narrative, based on the art of rhetoric and Belcanto. As a means to the expression of his ideas, he found an 1888 Steinway grand with an exceptionally wide dynamic range and singing tone. The result is an enervating and moving journey through these eternal masterpieces!

„Nocturnes“ is the 4th album of Maxence Cyrin. Having realized two albums where he reinterpreted pop, rock and electro anthems as a solo pianist (‘Modern Rhapsodies’, ‘Novö Piano’), then ‘The Fantasist’, an imaginary movie soundtrack, ‘Nocturnes’ is its first album of compositions for solo piano, putting back with current tastes a musical form adopted by several classic composers (Fauré, Field) and popularized by Chopin.

The night has always been a time of enchantment; it embodies the uncanny, but also the romantic side of human existence. For her new Hänssler release Jenny Lin has selected a program of night pieces that speak to both the sensual and more complex psychological aspects of nocturnal experiences – from Debussy’s "Clair de lune" to Arthur Lourié‘s "A Phoenix Park Nocturne" to Liszt's "Liebestraum" she evokes sounds, dancing, romance, far from everyday experiences, whispering of things hidden from the light of day.

Sophisticated colourist and cerebral virtuoso though he is, Nelson Goerner nevertheless brings out the moments of weakness, the hesitations, the lightning passions in the labyrinth of Chopin’, wrote Diapason on the release of the Preludes in 2015 (Diapason d’Or, Choc de Classica). ‘Serenity’, ‘balance’, ‘clarity’, ‘phrasing’ are the key words that recur in reviews of the discs and concerts of the Argentine pianist, whose fifth solo release on Alpha this is.

From the forward-thinking pianism and sublime originality displayed by the early Op. 9 (1830-31) to the filigreed arabesques that grace the middle-register melodies in the more imposing structures of Op. 62 (1846), it is the nocturnes that allow us to trace Chopins aesthetic evolution. Indeed, his intention to create a new era in art is here in full display, not only in the magical sonorities he managed to evoke from the instrument, but also in his revolutionary lyricism, present from the onset, in which operatic archetypes unite with completely new pianistic intuitions.
