O.C. Smith at Home was the finest showcase for the singer's warm, baritone vocals. Produced by Jerry Fuller, the LP's songs revolved around home and heart. The LP cover featured the singer walking with a little boy. The second single, the rousing, dynamic "Daddy's Little Man," hit Billboard's charts in fall 1969. Its flip side was the driving, horn-accented soap opera-themed "If I Leave You Now." The lushly orchestrated "The Learning Tree" was the opening title theme of the family drama movie directed by Gordon Parks. "Friend, Lover, Woman, Wife" cracked the R&B Top 25. All of this musical magic was wrapped up in the great arrangements of H.B. Barnum. Some of the LP tracks appeared on his O.C. Smith's Greatest Hits.

American listeners tend to remember Shocking Blue as the one-hit wonder behind the chart-topper "Venus," a melting pot of rock rhythms, country guitar licks, organ riffs, and Mariska Veres' heavily accented vocals. Sounding something like a cross between "96 Tears" and "Sugar, Sugar," "Venus" was not entirely representative of the group's first album, At Home. Like their fellow countrymen Golden Earring, Shocking Blue purveyed a mild strain of psychedelic rock, but leaned more toward country and folk music than bubblegum. Guitarist and principal songwriter Robby Van Leeuwen was already preoccupied with Americana at this early stage, from "Harley Davidson" and "California Here I Come" to a surprising rendition of the folk song "Boll Weevil" that sets the traditional lyrics to music reminiscent of the Easybeats' "Good Times."

In less than 24 months, Taj Mahal (guitars/vocals/banjo/harmonica) had issued the equivalent of four respective long-players. The electric Giant Step was released alongside the acoustic and decidedly rural De Ole Folks at Home. The nine cuts on Giant Step feature support from the instrumental trio of Jesse Ed Davis (guitar/keyboards), Gary Gilmore (bass), and Chuck Blackwell (drums). They back Taj Mahal on a wide selection of covers ranging from Carole King and Gerry Goffin's "Take a Giant Step" to the upbeat and soulful reading of the Huddie Ledbetter blues staple "Keep Your Hands Off Her." The arrangements are unique and offer the artist's distinctive approach. Nowhere is this more evident than the practically jovial midtempo "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl" or the freewheeling abandon brought to the 18-wheeler anthem "Six Days on the Road"…

Pianist Frank Merrick and violinist Henry Holst stand as witnesses to music's vulnerabilities. In this they are far from unique. The present recordings give a modern hearing to LPs which have, until now, been stashed away in the oubliette of history. They join those on Frank Merrick volume 1. The present set reminds us of works that were, at the time of recording in the late 1950s and early 1960s, unfashionable or even unknown. They found a voice in two musicians whose own careers were at or past their highest peak. This album is released with grateful thanks to Frank Merricks children, Celia, Paul & Phoebe, and to Rosalind Murrell, for their advice, photographs of Frank Merrick and the loan of multiple copies of these very rare LPs.

If home is Minnesota, and abroad is transcontinental, reaching across historical eras, then At Home and Abroad is aptly named. A captivating and varied (not to say ravishing and sprightly) collection of music for violin/viola and guitar, the album features works dedicated to the Shank-Hagedorn Duo by Alf Houkom, Javier Contreras, and David Lang; first time recordings of works by Ian Krouse and David Hahn; and the Duos own arrangements of music by Maria Kalaniemi.
