Iconic guitarist Frank Zappa’s 1971 touring lineups are showcased on The Mothers 1971, a Super Deluxe box set chock full of previously unreleased tracks. The huge collection features each of the four shows Frank Zappa and The Mothers played to help close down New York City’s Fillmore East on June 5-6, 1971 as well as the group’s full concert at the Rainbow Theatre in London from December 10, 1971 that ended in tragedy and an unreleased hybrid concert documenting performances from Scranton (June 1, 1971) and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania (June 3, 1971).

Frank Zappa’s incredibly rare recordings, believed to have been planned for a potential sequel to his iconic hot rats album, have been unearthed from the vault and compiled as new collection, Funky Nothingness features 25 unreleased and rare tracks and more than three and a half hours of never-before-heard compositions, covers, and jams from 1970 with core group of Ainsley Dunbar, Don “Sugarcane” Harris, Ian Underwood, and Max Bennett Three-Disc expanded deluxe edition contains outtakes, alternate edits, and unedited masters from little known recording sessions.

In the final quarter of 1975 and early 1976, Frank Zappa and his entourage were as busy touring as ever. Playing largely in US locations during 1975’s closing month (but including one strange stop in what was then still Yugoslavia, in November), the final show of ’75 was played on New Year’s Eve in Inglewood, California. By January 20, 1976, the band were in Sydney Australia to begin their Pacific and European tour of the year, playing six dates in the country. From there, they moved to Japan, where they performed four further shows. Playing in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, the Osaka concert remains the very finest of the Japanese shows, recorded as it was for live FM radio broadcast and still a fan favourite to this day. This new 2CD set now features for the first time the entire gig Frank Zappa and his band played at Osaka’s Kosei Nenkin Kaikan on 3rd February, 1976.

Frank Zappa Composer, guitarist, singer, and bandleader Frank Zappa was a singular musical figure during a performing and recording career that lasted from the 1960s to the '90s. His disparate influences included doo wop music and avant-garde classical music; although he led groups that could be called rock & roll bands for much of his career, he used them to create a hybrid style that bordered on jazz and complicated, modern serious music, sometimes inducing orchestras to play along. As if his music were not challenging enough, he overlay it with highly satirical and sometimes abstractly humorous lyrics and song titles that marked him as coming out of a provocative literary tradition that included Beat poets like Allen Ginsberg and edgy comedians like Lenny Bruce.

Presented from a hi-res transfer of the original master tape. The second, from Olympiahalle in Munich, is the first ever live direct to digital stereo recording of Zappa. Frank Zappa’s fall 1975 touring schedule brought him to two cities in Yugoslavia, marking the first and only time he played shows in that country. This 2 CD set combines performances from both shows, recorded live in Zagreb on November 21st and Ljubljana on November 22nd, 1975. This release showcases a rare band line-up of The Mothers, featuring Norma Bell on saxes and vocals. FZ would discontinue using The Mothers name for good after the European and Australian leg in early 1976. Re-mixed from the original 1/2” 8-track tape masters by Craig Parker Adams and mastered by John Polito, this historical set is the only multi-tracked document of this group in the Vault.
