Recorded in 1982 by Jeffrey Weber and arranger Allyn Ferguson, this live to two-track digital set showcases Freddie Hubbard in the company of two large bands - one a brass group, the other a string orchestra - both of which feature the same rhythm section. Ferguson wrote three tunes for the session, including the funky "Hubbard's Cupboard" and "Two Moods for Freddie" (which shifts gears from elegant and nocturnal to finger-popping contemporary electric jazz in the course of a couple of minutes); this pair opens and closes the album. The cover of Joe Zawinul's "Birdland" is reverent but swinging, and Hubbard's lone composition here, "Bridgitte," is a beautiful ballad that showcases the strings and Dan Ferguson's sweetly singing electric guitar and opens up into a midtempo groover…

In 1962, Freddie Hubbard was a full time member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, but he still had enough time to record three solo albums – "The Artistry of Freddie Hubbard" for the Impulse label, and "Here To Stay" and "Hub-Tones" for Blue Note. While the former two derive a lot of their sound from that unmistakable Messenger style, "Hub-Tones" draws it feel from two of Hubbard's collaborations from a few years earlier – "Free Jazz" and "Ole Coltrane." On "Hub-Tones," Hubbard utilizes the paths of freedom forged by Ornette and 'Trane, but stays grounded to the classic Blue Note sound. Joining Freddie on this October '62 session are James Spaulding (who unfortunately was never given the chance to record his own album for Blue Note, but was an important contributor to Grant Green's "Solid," Bobby Hutcherson's "Components" and Wayne Shorter's "Schizophrenia" among others) on alto sax and flute, Herbie Hancock on piano, Reggie Workman on bass and Clifford Jarvis on drums. Hubbard made many great albums for Blue Note, and "Hub-Tones" is as good as any of them.

This collection on the U.K.'s Soul Brother imprint is a very compelling look at a big slice of Freddie Hubbard's long career as a leader, and one that gets ignored for the most part. Hubbard recorded over 20 records between Backlash, his Atlantic debut in 1966, and Ride Like the Wind for Elektra in 1982, with lengthy stops at Columbia and CTI (as well some straight hard bop and post-bop outings for labels Fantasy and Pablo). In many cases, some of these original recordings were not only disregarded by more traditional jazzheads, they were regarded with outright hostility. It didn't matter to Hubbard, however, because at the time, these were among his best-selling albums and connected with the public deeply.

Backlash is the 1967 album by American jazz musician Freddie Hubbard. This was the first digital version reissued by Atlantic's jazz division, Atlantic Jazz and true to a number of CD's they reissued, it had different cover artwork than the original but it is the exact same music. All future reissues of Backlash would have the original cover.
